DAVIDSON, N.C. - The NCAA formally released Public Recognition Awards Tuesday for the sports teams achieving the highest level of academic performance in Division I, and the list included a Southern Conference-leading 13 Davidson College athletic programs.
Davidson is one of 21 programs out of the 335 that participate in Division I to place 10 or more of its athletic teams on the list this year. In men's basketball, the Wildcats are one of just 11 teams to receive the Public Recognition Award since the inception of the NCAA Academic Progress Rating (APR) in 2006.
The most recent APRs are based on scores from the 2006-07, 2007-08, 2008-09 and 2009-10 academic years. The NCAA tracks the classroom performance of student-athletes on every Division I sports team through its innovative APR, which provides an annual scorecard of academic achievement. By measuring eligibility and retention each semester or quarter, the APR provides a clear picture of the academic culture in each sport.
“This national acknowledgment is a tribute to the efforts of our tremendous student-athletes and the faculty and coaches who tirelessly guide them as they seek success in both academics and athletics,” said Davidson Director of Athletics Jim Murphy. “We are very proud of them all.”
The following Davidson programs posted multi-year APR scores in the top 10 percent of all squads in their respective sports:
Men's Basketball
Men's Cross Country
Men's Football
Men's Golf
Men's Tennis
Men's Track, Indoor
Men's Track, Outdoor
Women's Basketball
Women's Cross Country
Women's Field Hockey
Women's Soccer
Women's Swimming
Women's Volleyball
A total of 909 teams earned NCAA Public Recognition Awards, up from 841 teams last year, while 239 of the 335 Division I colleges and universities placed at least one team on the top APR list. Another 11 of the 52 schools that offer athletics in more than one division placed Division I teams on the list.
The Southern Conference placed 43 programs from nine league members on the list, marking the fourth consecutive year the conference has seen an increase in the number of programs earning the academic distinction.
High-performing teams receiving public recognition awards this year posted APR scores ranging from 977 to a perfect 1,000. The number of teams in some sports may exceed 10 percent depending on how many achieved perfect scores.
Multiyear APRs for all Division I sports teams, including the teams receiving public recognition, will be announced May 24. That announcement also will include immediate and historical penalties for low-performing teams.
