DAVIDSON, N.C. – The Davidson men's golf team will compete in it's final regular season tournament of the year Saturday and Sunday at the Irish Creek Collegiate Golf Tournament presented by Carolinas Medical Center – NorthEast and hosted by Charlotte and Davidson in conjunction with the Charlotte Regional Sports Commission at The Club at Irish Creek in Kannapolis, N.C.

The tournament is being played on the par-71, 7099-yard, Davis Love III designed course at Irish Creek for the second consecutive year. Joining host institutions Davidson and Charlotte in the competitive 13-team field will be Coastal Carolina, No. 21 Duke, Francis Marion, No. 50 Kennesaw State, Louisville, Mercer, No. 38 Middle Tennessee State, North Carolina, UNCG, Virginia Commonwealth and No. 28 Wake Forest.
Friday will be the practice round with a shotgun start of 12:30 p.m. followed by the College Team Skills Challenge, which is set to begin at 5:30 p.m. and will include 'Long Drive and Short Game' competitions.
Two 18-hole rounds will be played Saturday with an 8:30 a.m. shotgun start. Tee times Sunday will start at 8:00 a.m. and will be based on the team standings following the first two rounds. An awards ceremony will take place at the conclusion of play Sunday afternoon.
All rounds are free and open to the public.
“We are extremely excited about the incredible field we have assembled for this, our 14th annual collegiate golf tournament," said Jeff Beaver, the executive director of the Charlotte Regional Sports Commission. "The field, and our partners at the Davis Love III Signature Course at The Club at Irish Creek, makes this year's event one of the best ever.”
Charlotte won last year's tournament with the since-graduated Corey Nagy earning individual medalist honors. Davidson finished 11th.
The Wildcats opened the spring season with a fourth-place finish ahead of four other Southern Conference rivals at the Wexford Invitational Feb. 21-22, but have struggled in their most recent outings at the Seahawk Intercollegiate (Feb. 27-28) and the Furman Intercollegiate (Mar. 18-20), and will be looking for a strong outing before the following week's conference championship tournament.
For the year, the 'Cats' underclassmen have been the top performers. Freshman Richard Fountain won the Mizuno Savannah Intercollegiate, just his third collegiate tournament, back in the fall, and is tied for the team lead in stroke average with sophomore John Skeadas at 74.10. Skeadas has been one of the 'Cats' top performers in all three spring tournaments. He was Davidson's top performer outright at Furman, tied with Fountain at the Seahawk Intercollegiate and tied with freshman Sam Echikson for eighth-place at Wexford. Echikson ranks third on the team in stroke average at 75.00.
Upperclassmen Bobby Urso and Jackson Taylor will look to return to the top of the leaderboard this weekend as both earned top-20 finishes at Irish Creek last year. Urso fired a career-best 67 in the first round and ultimately finished in a tie for 15th, while Taylor placed 19th.
Davidson will next compete in the Southern Conference Championship, which returns to the Country Club of South Carolina in Florence, S.C. April 17-19 for the fifth consecutive year.
