BOONE, N.C. — Davidson captured the doubles point for the third straight match, but it was not enough as the Wildcats fell for the fifth match in a row, suffering a 5-2 defeat at the hands of Appalachian State on the road in Southern Conference men's tennis action on Saturday afternoon.
The Wildcats (4-15, 0-6 SoCon) earned doubles wins at the No. 1 and 2 spots, but the Mountaineers (12-4, 4-1 SoCon) were able to regroup and take five of the six singles matches in securing the league win.
The No. 1 team of Joe Schafer and Calum Gee picked up their third straight doubles win when they halted ASU's Alain Humblet and Philip Kloc 11 straight victories with a 9-7 decision. The pair improved to 7-9 overall and 3-3 in SoCon doubles matches.
Then securing the first team point for Davidson with an 8-4 triumph was Ethan Kallick and Walker Lyons at No. 2 for their eighth win overall. They also ran their league mark to 4-2.
After the rarity of losing the doubles point, which was just the fourth time this year for the Mountaineers, ASU scored singles wins at No. 1, 3, 4, 5 and 6 for the victory.
Chris Mark got Davidson it's second and final team point with a 7-6, 6-3 win at No. 2 as the sophomore won his seventh singles match of the year.
Davidson plays host to Georgia Southern this weekend on Sunday at home for a 1 p.m. match.
