DAVIDSON, N.C. — For the second year in a row, senior defender Lily Graham (Washington, D.C.) took home one of the top honors from the National Lacrosse Conference, garnering Defender of the Year, while three other of her teammates were named to either the first or second team as announced by the league at the NLC banquet on Saturday night.
Joining Graham, who was also a first-team pick, was sophomore Alanna Parker (Spring Valley, Calif.) and Ann Fucigna (Darien, Conn.) on the first team, while sophomore defender Erin McGuire (Bishopville, Md.) was named to the league's second team.
Also representing the Wildcats on the NLC All-Academic team was sophomore Abigail Doelger (West Hartford, Conn.). The defender had a strong second year, setting personal bests in groundballs (13), draw controls (8) and caused turnovers (5). She also earned her first collegiate start.
Graham has been a staple in the Wildcat lineup the last three years, starting 52 straight games. The senior, who along with Michelle Pav picked up Defender and Goalie of the Year honors last year, forced a team and career-best 23 turnovers this year and hauled in 28 groundballs. In her second-to-last game of her career, she helped lead the Wildcats to a quarterfinal win vs. Liberty in the NLC Tournament with personal highs and team season bests in groundballs (8) and caused turnovers (6).
A senior tri-captain this season, Graham led a senior filled defense that also included Lauren Vanhusen, Stella Davis and Taylor Ketcham.
Also playing a key role on the defensive side was McGuire. In her second year, the defender started 13 of the 'Cats' 15 games. She ranked third on the team in groundballs with 25, while forcing five turnovers and hauling in 30 draw controls, tied for third on the team. All this coming after she recorded 36 groundballs, 14 caused turnovers and 40 draw controls during an outstanding freshman campaign last year.
When it came to Davidson's offense, Fucigna and Parker were two of the best in leading the Wildcats on the attack. Parker, an NLC Second Team member last year, was second on the team with 37 goals and 40 points. She recently had a 22-game string snapped of scoring at least one goal in all 22 games dating back to the last eight games of last year. The sophomore recorded 12 multi-goal games, including matching her career-high with five goals and setting a new personal-best with six points in a win over Howard.
Beside her offensive output, Parker contributed a career-high 47 draw controls, 21 groundballs and a new personal-best 11 caused turnovers.
Fucigna was one of the top freshman this year in the NLC, and finished the year on a torrid scoring pace. The first-year Wildcat led the team with 49 goals and 60 points. Fucigna's 49 goals tied the single-season record set last year by Jen Crawford, while her 60 points ranked third-most in a single-season.
After being held scoreless in back-to-back games Feb. 20 and 23, Fucigna was a scoring machine. She closed the season with 10 straight multi-goal games, including netting a season-best six goals in a 17-11 triumph at Presbyterian. The freshman also added a season and team season-high eight points in the win, assisting on two goals, and had 11 assists overall on the season, good for second-best on the squad.
Of her 49 goals, 47 of them came in the last 15 games for an average of 3.1 per game. Fucigna was also very successful in free-position attempts, going 16-for-22, a team-best.
Longwood took two of the top league honors, as Juli Liebig was the Goalie of the Year and Cara O'Brien was tabbed Midfielder of the Year.
High Point took the other top two honors, with Grace Gaeng earning Attacker of the Year after leading the league in points with 66 (45 goals / 21 assists). Lyndsey Boswell was named Coach of the Year by her peers, leading High Point, a first-year program, to a 12-3 record and 6-1 in the NLC, good for second-best.
Davidson finished the year 6-12 after going 1-1 at the NLC Tournament, Apr. 29-May 1. The 'Cats picked up an 11-6 win vs. Liberty to open the tournament, but fell to Jacksonville, 19-7, in the semifinals.
