DAVIDSON, N.C. — Davidson College will be the destination for the National Lacrosse Tournament this weekend, Apr. 29-May 1, as the Wildcats will open the tournament on Friday vs. Liberty.
The Opening Draw Control
Davidson (5-11, 4-3 NLC), which earned the fourth seed, will start its quest for its first NLC Tournament Title on Friday at Richardson Stadium, when the Wildcats open against fifth-seeded Liberty (6-10, 2-5 NLC). Gametime is set for 2 p.m. after the first game between top-seed Jacksonville and eighth-seed Howard at 11:30 a.m.
Should the Wildcats advance, they would face the winner of Jacksonville-Howard on Saturday at 11:30 a.m. If the 'Cats fall, they would then play the loser of that same matchup, with gametime set for 9 a.m.
All tournament coverage can be followed at the NLC website.
National Lacrosse Conference Tournament
This is Davidson's second year in the NLC. Last year saw the Wildcats reach the finals with wins over Howard (20-3) and Jacksonville (10-9), before falling to champion Longwood by the score of 17-9.
The All-Time Series/Last Meeting
Friday's contest vs. Liberty will be just the third meeting as the Flames are in their second year of having women's lacrosse. Davidson is 2-0 all-time after taking a 12-8 decision on the road back on Apr. 10.
In that meeting, freshman Ann Fucigna reached the 30-goal mark on the season with four goals and Davidson picked up its third straight win. The first half was a tightly played contest as Davidson and Liberty traded leads five times and were tied four times as well.
Davidson finally broke through then in the last eight minutes of the half, scoring the final three goals of the period to capture a 6-4 halftime lead and it would never trail the rest of the way.
The Wildcats are also perfect against Howard, owning an 8-0 mark, including this year's 16-6 win, while they are 2-1 vs. Jacksonville, with their first loss coming this year at JU, 13-9.
Last Time Out...
... Davidson — Looking to give their four seniors a winning ending in their last regular season game before the National Lacrosse Tournament starts next week, Davidson ran into a tough American University squad as the Eagles picked up a 23-5 win over the Wildcats to spoil their Senior Day.
It marked the final regular-season home game for seniors Lily Graham, Lauren Vanhusen, Stella Davis and Taylor Ketcham.
American rattled off six straight goals to open the game and Davidson never recovered.
The 'Cats were led by the freshmen duo of Fucigna and Paige Logan with two scores each. Fucigna pushed her team-best goal total to 44 on the year and has now recorded at least two goals in eight straight games. The freshman is just five goals away from matching the single-season record set last year by Jen Crawford at 49. She is just outside the top-five in points with 53.
... Liberty — The Liberty women's lacrosse team concluded regular-season play on Saturday with a win, defeating Lees-McRae, 22-6.
Liberty's 22 markers also set a new program record for most goals in a single game.
Karis Walborn highlighted the Liberty offense with five goals and two assists. Five other Lady Flames finished with two goals apiece – Audra Menez, Emily Dinsmore, Jen Moyer, Kristin Crowley and Anna Starling.
Kristen Masullo occupied the net for Liberty in the first period, recording seven saves. Blaire Barnhart came in for the entire second period, making two stops.
