Elon Ends Davidson’s Season, 4-1, at SoCon Tournament in W. Tennis

CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. — Davidson opened up its first-round match vs. Elon by winning the doubles point, but the Phoenix captured four of the six singles matches to secure the 4-1 decision on the first day at the Southern Conference Women's Tennis Tournament in Chattanooga, Tenn.
Davidson opened the match by taking the doubles point, the third time in the last four matches the 'Cats jumped out to an early 1-0 lead. Senior Samantha Galainena (Burr Ridge, Ill.) and junior Katharine Dicconson (Pacific Grove, Calif.) got things rolling with an 8-4 win at No. 3 doubles. The duo took home their second win together on the season.
Elon (12-10) came back to win the No. 1 doubles slot, but the senior-junior pair of Alison Rauh (Trier, Germany) and Stephani Synn (Conover, N.C.) closed out the team point at No. 2 doubles with an 8-5 triumph over Frida Jansaker and Bryn Khoury. The win was the duos fifth straight to close out the year as they finished 5-1 together on the season.
Davidson gave the Phoenix a run in the singles matches, but it fell short in its bid to move on in the next round. Elon took wins at No. 2, 3, 4 and 5 for its four points.
Nisha Crouser (Columbus, Ohio) dropped a 6-0, 6-2 decision at No. 3 to give Elon its first point, then the Phoenix's Viviana Starvreva earned a 6-2, 6-4 win at No. 4 over Brites Moniz-Soares (Angra Do Heroismo, Portugal) for point number two. Moniz-Soares closed out her freshman campaign with a team-best eight singles wins.
Rauh and Galainena then dropped a pair of matches, with Rauh falling 6-2, 7-5 at No. 2 and Galainena gave up a 6-1, 7-5 decision to Briana Berne at No. 5.
Davidson closed out the season at 5-20 overall and 1-9 in SoCon action. It marked the final matches for the senior pair of Galainena and Rauh. Galainena ended her four-year career with 31 singles wins and 18 doubles wins, while Rauh tallied 27 singles wins and 44 doubles wins, getting at least 10 wins in all four seasons.
