DAVIDSON, N.C. — Junior LHP Chris Lamb struck out a season-high 11 and went the distance in the three-hit, 1-0 complete-game shutout over the Furman Paladins to earn Southern Conference Pitcher of the Week honors for the week of February 28-March 6, as selected and announced by the conference office today.
Lamb struck out 11 in a 1-0 three-hit, complete game shutout of Furman in both team's SoCon openers Friday night at Wilson Field. He made it into the ninth inning for a second straight outing and finished off the Paladins for his first complete game of the season. Lamb walked just one, a two-out walk in the third after he retired his first five hitters, and struck out 11 in the game that lasted just over two hours.
Lamb led Davidson to its first shutout since April 22, 2009, when the Wildcats blanked NC A&T, 7-0. The Wildcats' last Southern Conference shutout dates back to March 31, 2006, a 6-0 win over Georgia Southern. He also tossed the Wildcats' last complete game and only one of the 2010 season, a seven-inning, 6-2 win over NC Central on April 17, 2010. Prior to that, Rob Wilson was the last Wildcat to throw a complete game, with two in 2007.
It is the first career weekly honor for Lamb, and the last for a Wildcat since Mike Frongello was named Pitcher of the Week for April 20, 2009.
Elon senior shortstop Neal Pritchard was named the Southern Conference Baseball Player of the Week. Pritchard reached base safely in all five games, batting .615 with two home runs and eight RBIs. The senior drove in a season-high four runs in a win over West Virginia, and he had multiple RBIs in three of five games while recording a .737 on-base percentage and slugging 1.154.
Other hitters receiving consideration were College of Charleston's Matt Leeds, Western Carolina's Ross Heffley, The Citadel's Drew DeKerlegand, Appalachian State's Tyler Zupcic, Furman's Will Miller, Georgia Southern's Eric Phillips, UNCG's Bobby Martin, Samford's Michael Johnson and Wofford's Konstantine Diamaduros.
Other top performers among pitchers were The Citadel's Austin Pritcher, Samford's Lex Rutledge, Western Carolina's Dakotah Thomas, Appalachian State's Ryan Arrowood, College of Charleston's Nick Osterman, Elon's Ken Ferrer, Furman's Daniel Stallsmith, Georgia Southern's Matt Murray and Wofford's Cash Collins.
