3/28/2011 10:38:40 PM | Baseball
DAVIDSON, N.C. —The Davidson Wildcats will wrap up a five-game home stand when they host the NC Central Eagles Tuesday at 6 p.m. at Wilson Field.
Junior RHP Brian Russell (1-2, 6.75) is slated to start for Davidson (11-12, 5-6 SoCon) against senior RHP Douglas Dalley (0-3, 9.33 ERA) for NC Central (1-22, 0-4 MEAC).
About the Series
The Wildcats are a perfect 5-0 all-time against NC Central, including the four games the teams played last season — a midweek, 16-2 win in Durham on February 23 and a three-game series sweep (17-7, 9-2, 19-4) in April between a Saturday doubleheader in Davidson and a Sunday game in Durham. The teams first met February 24, 2009, a 12-2 Davidson victory at Wilson Field.
Last Meeting
Just four games into the 2010 season, James Cerbie and Andrew Barna each recorded three hits and drove in three runs to pace the Wildcats to a 16-2 win over NC Central in their first road game of the season on Tuesday, February 23.
Davidson finished the game with 17 hits, including three by Drew Gadaire and Will General and a pair by Sam Payne. Russell earned the win after allowing just one run on two hits in 2 2/3 innings of work in a scheduled limited start, and Thomas Middour, Ian Horkley, Mac Read, Michael Loeb and Mike Frongello combined to allow just one run on two hits in 6 1/3 innings of relief. The Wildcats scored in all but two innings and put up four runs in both the third — highlighted by a two-RBI double by Barna, and the fifth — as Jake Berman, Michael Zeblo, Cerbie and Gadaire each drove in a run. Cerbie and General each had solo home runs in the game.
The Wildcats and Eagles also played a three-game series in April that featured a doubleheader at Wilson Field on April 17 and a return trip to Durham the following afternoon. Tied at 4-4, Davidson exploded for 13 runs, including five in the fourth, over the final five innings to win the opening game, before Chris Lamb retired a career-high 16, one off the Davidson record, and held the Eagles to two runs on four hits in a seven-inning, complete game in the nightcap. Danny Weiss tied a school record with three doubles, and Barna and General each had three hits in the first game to help Ryan Overcash, who allowed five runs (two earned) on eight hits and struck out three in five innings, improve to a perfect 5-0. After the Eagles got a couple of runs in the first inning, Lamb scattered just two hits over the final six innings for his first career complete game. His 16 punch outs were just one off the Davidson record of 17, first achieved by Clarence Clark at Wake Forest on April 14, 1908, and last by Greg Wilcox at Charlotte on May 8, 1988.
The following afternoon, Davidson rode an early 8-0 lead to a 14-4 victory behind 17 hits, including three each by Barna and Calvin Sigelbaum, to complete the series sweep Sunday at Durham Athletic Park. After Barna and Payne drove in a pair of runs in the first, the Wildcats took control with a six-run second behind two errors and five hits, including a two-run, two-out home run by Payne. Freeman and Gadaire also had a pair of hits in the game, and Zeblo hit a solo home run in the seventh. Thomas Middour earned the win, holding the Eagles to a lone run on four hits while striking out five over five innings.
About the Wildcats
After winning the final game of the weekend series against Western Carolina, the Wildcats are in seventh place in the league standings, behind the College of Charleston (3-3) and ahead of The Citadel (5-7).
After batting .562 (9-for-16) this week, Gadaire raised his average nearly 30 points and jumped up to third in the league with a team-high .432 batting average. Freshman left fielder Forrest Brandt continues to rank among league leaders with the fifth-best average in the SoCon (.386). The pair, which are tied for ninth in the league with 32 hits, are also in the top 15 in slugging percentage, ranking fifth (.608) and 14th (.530), respectively. Weiss has the fifth-best on-base percentage (.494) in the league, followed immediately by Gadaire (.482). Brandt is tied for eighth with a .464 on-base percentage and is also third with nine doubles. Weiss has drawn 17 walks, fifth best in the league, and Zeblo is tied for 12th-best in the SoCon with 15.
The Wildcats have three pitchers ranked in the top 15 in ERA in Frongello (third, 1.49), Overcash (10th, 2.70) and Lamb (14th, 2.90). Frongello (.235) and Lamb (.245) are ranked 10th and 12th, respectively, in opposing batting average. Lamb is third in the league in both innings pitched (40.1) and strikeouts (46), and Frongello is eighth in innings pitched (36.1). The league leader in appearances (15), Frongello is also tied for eighth with three saves, and senior Andy Bass is tied for 11th with a pair. Horkley is second in the league in walks allowed with three.
About the Eagles
NC Central has an overall record of 1-22 and is 0-4 in the MEAC. The Eagles' lone win was a 22-5 victory at Florida A&M on March 9, the final game of a three-game series. The Eagles have been swept by Temple, Georgia Southern, Presbyterian, Buffalo and Delaware State in three-game series and have lost single games against Duke (twice), Villanova and Charlotte. As a team, the Eagles are batting .289, with four starters over .300, but have a team ERA of 9.67.
Akeem Hood leads NC Central with a .386 average and has a team-best 32 hits, including four doubles, a triple and five RBI to go along with a team-best 6-for-6 in stolen bases. Carter Williamson is batting .354 with 13 RBI, and Blake Murray leads the team with 15 RBI. Tyson Simpson has a team-best two home runs, and Troy Marrow leads the Eagles with six doubles. Dalley is 0-3 on the season with a 9.33 ERA, having allowed 30 runs (19 earned) on 36 hits, walked 22 and struck out eight in 18 1/3 innings.
Last Time Out
After the Western Carolina Catamounts secured the series victory with a 7-1 win in the first game of Sunday's doubleheader at Wilson Field, freshman right fielder Kelly Myers' three-run, walk off home run in the bottom of the 10th lifted the Davidson Wildcats to a 3-0 win in the nightcap.
Myers' (2-for-4, 3 RBI, HR) walk off hit made a winner out of Bass, who scattered two hits and struck out four over the final 3 2/3 shutout innings in game two in relief of junior Overcash. Overcash struck out seven and allowed just five hits in 6 1/3 shutout innings in the no decision. Overcash and Western Carolina's Kyle Stewart took turns putting up zeroes on the scoreboard, and after Stewart left in the fifth, Andrew Chilcoat continued the trend by tossing three shutout innings of relief. Western was threatening in the seventh as Matt Johns and Cameron Dullnig each singled to put runners on the corners with one out to bring on Bass. Sigelbaum made a spectacular play on a foul ball to end Dykota Spiess' at-bat, and Bass struck out Aaron Attaway to end the inning. Bass allowed a pair of two-out base hits over the next two innings, and Myers made him a winner in the 10th with his third home run of the season, also scoring Sigelbaum (fielder's choice) and Cerbie (walk).
In the first game of the doubleheader, the Catamounts tacked on four runs in the ninth to a 3-1 lead to win the series. Jordan Smith allowed just one run and scattered four hits through eight innings and struck out nine. Horkley took the loss, despite allowing just a pair of runs and striking out seven in five innings. Davidson got its lone run in the seventh on an RBI-groundout from Zeblo that scored Gadaire (leadoff single). That score cut into Western's 3-0 lead, but the Catamounts tacked on four runs in the ninth to win the series.
Matt Benedict allowed just one run over eight innings and struck out 13 to lead the Catamounts to a 2-1 win over the Davidson Wildcats in the opening game of the SoCon series Friday night at Wilson Field. After getting lone hits in the first and second, Western got to Lamb for a run on a pair of hits in the third. Aaron Attaway doubled into the corner in right and bumped to third on a groundout in the next at-bat before scoring on an RBI-single from Matt Johns. But Zeblo, Cerbie and Gadaire turned a double play to keep it a one-run game. Lamb faced the minimum in the fourth, and the Wildcats tied it up as Barna doubled in Gadaire (double). The 'Cats couldn't take advantage of a leadoff double from Myers in the fifth, and the Catamounts added what proved to be the winning run in the sixth on an RBI-single from Ross Heffley.

Samford swept The Citadel (4-3, 8-7, 2-1) in three straight one-run games in Charleston and took two of three from Georgia Southern (5-4, 9-2, 2-9) in Birmingham last weekend. This weekend, Elon handed the Bulldogs their first series loss of the season, winning the first (10-8) and last (4-2) games of the series. Samford won game two, 11-0.
