DAVIDSON, N.C. - Davidson coach Tripp Merritt announced today that he has named Robert Fickling offensive line coach for the Wildcat football program.
Fickling comes to Davidson from West Texas A&M University, where he spent the 2010 campaign. He helped direct an offensive line that allowed one sack per 33 passing attempts and an offense that averaged 42 points a game (ranked fourth in the nation) and 529 yards (ranked second in nation). The Buffaloes ranked second in the country in passing and also averaged 100 rushing yards a game.
“We are extremely excited about bringing Robert into our family,” said Merritt. “He has an in-depth, working knowledge of our new 'Air Raid' offense and successful experience in a program that put up some significant offensive numbers a year ago. He brings a high level of enthusiasm, maturity and discipline to our offensive line.”
Fickling received his bachelor's degree in political science from Texas Tech in 2003 and is working towards a master's degree in sports management at American Military University. Prior to starting a career in coaching, he served five years as a sergeant in Army Military Intelligence, including a 14-month tour of duty in Iraq.
Fickling and his wife, Brittany, have two sons, Scott and Sean.
Davidson returns 15 starters, including five All-Pioneer Football League players and 2010 PFL Offensive Freshman of the Year, quarterback Jonathan Carkhuff, to the 2011 team. The Wildcats held their second practice of the spring season today.
