DAVIDSON, N.C. — With the return of eight starters, including All-National Lacrosse Conference Defender of the Year Lily Graham, the Davidson Wildcats were picked to finish second in the NLC preseason poll as voted on by the league's coaches.
Graham (Washington, D.C.) along with fellow classmate Stella Davis (Phoenix, Md.) and sophomore Alanna Parker (Spring Valley, Calif.) were each named to the 2011 preseason NLC Team.
Davidson, in its first year in the NLC a year ago, finished 5-1 in the league (9-9 overall) and reached the tournament finals where if fell to eventual champion Longwood. The Lancers were picked again to repeat as champions by the coaches.
Graham, who took home top league defender honors last year, again was the pick to be the defender of the year. The senior had a breakout junior campaign, earning NLC First Team honors as she started a career-best 18 games. She had career highs of 23 groundballs and 13 caused turnovers.
A first-team NLC pick last year, Davis started 15 of 16 games as a junior on the defensive side. She was one of four Wildcats to grab over 20 draw controls, getting a personal-best 21. Davis was honored with the team's Coach's Award.
Parker represents the 'Cats on the offensive side of the ball on the preseason all-league team after garnering second-team honors a season ago as a freshman. The midfielder ranked third on the team in goals (39), assists (12) and points (51). She had 11-multi-goal games, including twice netting five goals in a contest.
The NLC coaches selected preseason players of the year by position. In addition to Graham earning defender of the year honors, Karli Tobin of Jacksonville was tabbed as preseason Goalie of the Year. Last season saw the Wildcats' Michele Pav pick up top goalie honors at the end of the year.
Desiree Cox of Howard (57 goals and the 2010 NLC Attacker of the Year) was chosen as preseason Attacker of the Year and Emily Boissonneault of Detroit Mercy (the 2010 NLC point leader with 83 points) was chosen as preseason Midfielder of the Year.
The Preseason All-NLC team consists of Longwood's Cara O'Brien, Grace Gaeng from High Point, and Desiree Cox of Howard at attack. Emily Boissonneault is joined by Detroit Titan teammate Anna Eidem, Kelsey Dean from Longwood and Parker of Davidson in the midfield. Jessica Hotchkiss from Jacksonville and the teammates of Graham and Davis from Davidson were selected as the NLC 2011 Pre-season defensive unit.
Davidson opens league play at Longwood on Mar. 19 with gametime set for 1 p.m. The 'Cats will play three of their seven NLC games at home this season.
