DAVIDSON, N.C. — Senior right-handed reliever Mike Frongello has been selected as one of 30 NCAA baseball student-athletes — the only one from the Southern Conference, as candidates for the Lowe's Senior CLASS Award.
The nation's premier award for NCAA senior student-athletes, the Lowe's Senior CLASS Award recognizes those who excel both on and off the field. To be eligible for the award, a student-athlete must be classified as an NCAA Division I senior and have notable achievements in four areas of excellence – community, classroom, character and competition. An acronym for Celebrating Loyalty and Achievement for Staying in School, the Lowe's Senior CLASS Award focuses on the total student-athlete and encourages students to use their platform in athletics to make a positive impact as leaders in their communities. Davidson's career appearance leader, Frongello made his 100th career appearance and picked up his ninth career save as the Wildcats defeated Radford, 6-5, Sunday, February 20. He also earned the win against Georgetown the previous day, allowing just two hits and striking out a pair over the final 2.1 shutout innings in Davidson's 2-1 victory.
Frongello led the league and set the school's single-season record with 34 appearances as a sophomore, and has led the Wildcats in ERA for the past two seasons. His 4.50 ERA ranked seventh best in the league in 2010, and he held opponents to a .292 batting average, the 14th best in the league. He ranks fourth in Davidson history with nine saves, including five during the 2007 for the seventh-best single season in school history. Frongello has a career ERA of 4.74 to go along with a record of 8-10 in 138.2 innings, to go along with 90 career strikeouts to 37 walks.
Off the field, Frongello excels in the classroom. He maintains a 3.52 cumulative GPA, as a sociology major and an economics minor. A two-time academic All-Southern Conference honoree, he has a 3.89 GPA in his sociology major. Frongello is on pace to graduate cum laude and with honors in Sociology, and plans to attend law school after graduation.
Named one of three team captains for the 2011 season, Frongello was named the team's Most Valuable Pitcher in 2009. He is the president of the Omicron Delta Kappa, the national leadership honor society, the vice-president of Davidson's Pre-Law Society, a member of the Phi-Delta Theta fraternity and the sports editor of The Davidsonian.
As co-president of Davidson's SAAC for the 2010-11 academic year and a member of Phi-Delta Theta, Frongello is an active member of the Davidson community as well. He has participated in Toys for Tots for the last three years, helping to organize the 2010 effort as president, which brought in over 500 toys. In December of 2009, he led the baseball team in purchasing Christmas gifts for three children as part of SAAC's Angel Tree outreach, and has helped plan SAAC's Cats' Carnival for the past three years.
With Phi-Delta Theta, Frongello helped design and sell T-shirts for Dunk a Delta for Diabetes to raise money for Diabetes research, and Bench Press for Breast Cancer to support breast cancer research. He also cleaned several rooms as a part of the Helping Hands for Haiti fundraiser in January of 2010 to benefit earthquake victims in Haiti, and sold the voices of fraternity brothers and contributed his voice to Valentine's Songs for V-D Awareness each February to benefit local STD awareness and education groups.
Frongello also helped with the weekly set up for the Davidson farmer's market during the fall of 2010, along with other members of the baseball team, and helped set up and publicize a Race for the Cure event. As part of the Davidson Elementary Lunch Buddy Program, he mentored at-risk children during the spring semester of 2009, having lunch every Friday with a promising fourth grader named Emerson.
The 2011 candidate class includes 15 student-athletes with cumulative grade point averages of better than a 3.5, including three with perfect 4.0 GPAs. Seven are from teams ranked in the Collegiate Baseball preseason top 35 poll. For a complete list of the candidates, visit www.seniorclassaward.com.
