DAVIDSON, N.C. – Following five seasons as an assistant baseball coach at Davidson, Mike Zandler was named as the new head baseball coach at the University of Illinois Springfield Monday.
Zandler guided the Wildcat pitching staff, which posted a declining team ERA and opponent's batting average throughout his tenure.
“It has been an honor to represent Davidson College for the past five years,” said Zandler. “I would like to thank Coach Dick Cooke for giving me the opportunity to represent such an outstanding institution. Most importantly, I would like to thank all of the players and assistant coaches that I have had the opportunity to work with during my tenure at Davidson. The experience that I gained at Davidson College and coaching in the SoCon will serve me well in my new position at the University of Illinois Springfield.”
During the 2011 season, the Wildcat pitching staff ranked among league leaders in ERA. Additionally, Zandler coached a pair of Wildcats selected in the 2011 Major League Baseball draft in left-hander pitcher Chris Lamb (11th round, 346th overall) and right-handed pitcher Andy Bass (18th round, 570th overall). Lamb, who earned national and SoCon Pitcher of the Week honors with an 11-strikeout, 1-0 complete-game shutout of Furman, became the highest pitcher drafted in Davidson history, while Zandler also coached Mike Frongello to the all-time SoCon appearance record (136).
“This is a great opportunity for Mike,” said Davidson head coach Dick Cooke. “His dedication to and passion for Davidson College have been tremendous and this is a well-deserved position for him. The entire program wishes him and his family well.”
University of Illinois Springfield competes in the NCAA Division II Great Lakes Valley Conference.
