DAVIDSON, N.C. – Two of the top high school golfers in the state of North Carolina will comprise the Davidson men's golf Class of 2016, as head coach Tim Straub announced the signings of Alex Nianouris and David Sargent Thursday.
Nianouris, coming from Salisbury N.C., is ranked fourth and Cornelius, N.C. native Sargent ranks sixth in the state for the high school Class of 2012 by the Carolinas Golf Association.
“I am very excited to have David and Alex join our golf program next year,” said Straub. “They are terrific student-athletes who will have an immediate impact on our golf team and the Davidson College community.”
Nianouris is ranked 75th in the nation on the National Junior Golf Scoreboard. He led his Salisbury High School team to the 2011 NCHSAA Team State Championship and individually tied for second at the 2011 Tarheel Youth Golf Association State Championship. He also placed fourth in the Dogwood Junior Championship and sixth in the 2011 North and South Junior Championship. In the North Carolina Men's Amateur Match Play Championship, he made it to the round of 16.
Sargent is ranked 151st in the country by the American Junior Golf Association and attends Hough High School. He took medalist honors at North Carolina's U.S. Junior Sectional Qualifier to earn a place in the 2011 U.S. Junior Championship, and was a medalist in a state qualifying tournament for the 2011 Callaway Junior World Golf Championship. He tied for 20th at the 2011 North Carolina Men's Amateur and tied for 13th in the 2011 AJGA Webb Simpson Championship.
“They both bring an extensive list of accomplishments in the junior golf world and I look for both of them to have terrific college careers,” said Straub. “The future of our golf team looks very bright with our core group of returning players and the addition of Alex and David.”
The Davidson golf team returns to action February 20-21 at the Wexford Plantation Collegiate in Hilton Head, S.C.
