LOUISVILLE, Ky. – Ryan Hopkins turned in the best performance ever by a Davidson runner at the NCAA Men's Cross Country Southeast Region Championship on the University of Louisville's E.P. Tom Sawyer Course Saturday morning. The senior broke the school 10K course record and earned all-region honors with a 12th place finish in 30:22.0 to lead the Wildcats to a 14th place finish.
Hopkins bested the school record of 31:07 held by Brent Ferrell since the NCAA Southeast Regionals in 1999. Ferrell placed 26th in that meet, which was the previous best finish by a Wildcat runner.
“Overall, the guys ran faster times than they did two years ago when we finished 12th, but it was a faster field this season,” said head coach Gary Andrew. “It was a good, solid performance.”
As a team, Davidson placed 14th with 409 points in the 32-team field of 218 runners. The Wildcats were 15 points behind 13th-place finishing Wake Forest (394). They also finished ahead of notable teams such as Kentucky (16th place, 422 points), Clemson (17th, 422), Appalachian State (18th, 457) and Charlotte (21st, 570).
Junior Vincent Weir was Davidson's second finisher with an 88th-place finish in 32:17.7, while classmates Demetrios Pagonis (97th, 32:29.8) and Wes Reynolds (102nd, 32:32.5) followed with times that rank among the top-10 best performers in Davidson history.
Sophomore Grayam Sailor-Tynes placed 111th in 32:45.9 to round out the 'Cats' top-five scoring group. Sophomore Andrew Lantz (115th, 32:55.2) and freshman Whitner Chase (136th, 33:18.6) were the sixth and seventh finishers for the 'Cats.
NC State won the team title with 68 points and Eastern Kentucky placed second with 139 points to earn the automatic bids to the National Championship meet on Nov. 21 in Terre Haute, Ind. NC State's Ryan Hill won the race individually in 29:48.8.
Hopkins is a potential at-large selection. The NCAA Division I Track & Field Subcommittee will announce at-large selections Sunday evening.
“We'll wait and see if Ryan gets selected for the National Championship meet,” said Andrew. “Regardless of whether he gets selected or not, he had a tremendous year and it was fun to watch. It was a great year for the rest of our team too.”
