CHARLESTON, S.C. – For the fourth time this season, senior Ryan Hopkins smashed the all-time Davidson men's cross country 8K record, but it was not quite enough for the league crown as he led the Wildcats to a second-place finish with his runner-up placing at the Southern Conference Men's Cross Country Championship Saturday morning at the Trophy Lakes course.
Hopkins completed the course in 23 minutes, 30.91 seconds to easily best his old record of 23:57.
“Ryan ran an awesome race, but UNCG was just phenomenal today,” said Davidson head coach Gary Andrew.
UNCG's Paul Chelimo led from the start of the race as he claimed the individual men's title, finishing in a time of 23:11.56. UNCG's Joey Thompson and Paul Katam finished third and fourth, respectively, while Chattanooga's Chris Berry rounds out the top five finishers on the men's side.
The Spartan men finished with 26 points followed by Davidson in second place with 73 points. This is the first time in six seasons that Appalachian State did not win the men's team title.
Hopkins was Davidson's lone representative on the All-Southern Conference team as juniors Wes Reynolds and Demetrios Pagonis placed just outside the top 14 in 15th and 16th, respectively. Reynolds finished in a personal best 24:58.31 to earn a place on Davidson's all-time top-10 performers list, while Pagonis just trailed at 24:58.65.
Junior Vincent Weir was Davidson's fourth finisher in 18th place (25:02.19), while sophomore Grayam Sailor-Tynes was 22nd in 25:17.99. Sophomore Andrew Lantz placed 26th in 25:20.70 and senior Ian Tupper was 36th in 25:35.49.
“I'm proud of the guys and the season they have had up to this point, and I'm particularly proud of Ryan,” said Andrew.
Davidson, ranked 10th in the Southeast region by the U. S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association, will next compete at the NCAA Southeast Region Championships on Saturday, Nov. 12 in Louisville, Ky.
