Echikson Leads Golf with 68 to Conclude Firestone Invitational

AKRON, Ohio – Sophomore Sam Echikson led the Davidson men's golf team in the final round Tuesday with a four-under-par 68, as the Wildcats placed in a tie for 13th at 883 (300+294+289) in the Firestone Invitational at Firestone Country Club.
Echikson ended up leading Davidson individually for the tournament, placing in a tie for 27th at 218 (75+75+68). Classmate Richard Fountain was one stoke back in a tie for 30th at 219 (74+72+73). Senior Jackson Taylor also fired a final-round 73 and finished in a tie for 51st at 223 (75+75+73). Junior John Skeadas rounded out Davidson's scoring group in the final round with a 75.
The Wildcats were tied with Miami (Ohio) for 14th after the first two rounds Monday, but each squad fired a final-round 289 to remain deadlocked in the 17-team field. The teams moved past Illinois State (887) and finished two strokes behind Nebraska (881).
Indiana, ranked 34th by Golfstat, and St. Mary's (Calif.) tied for the team title at 854, 10-under-par. St. Mary's Mac McClung won individual medalist honors in the 90-player field by four strokes at 205, 11-under-par.
Iowa State (859), SMU (863), ranked 36th by Golfstat, and Ball State (864) rounded out the top five. The host University of Akron team placed in a tie for eighth with South Alabama at 872. Davidson was the lone Southern Conference team competing in the tournament.
Davidson concludes the fall season next Monday and Tuesday at The Invitational at the Ocean Course in Kiawah Island, S.C.
