DAVIDSON, N.C. – Top-ranked junior golfers Todd Eckstein and Ralph Blasey will join the Wildcats next fall, Davidson head men's golf coach Tim Straub announced Thursday.
Eckstein, who hails from Durham, N.C. and attends Trinity School of Durham, is ranked sixth in the state of North Carolina by Carolinas Junior Golf, while Blasey, a Kensington, Md. native who attends The Landon School, is ranked seventh in the state of Maryland by Golfweek.
Eckstein will join Richard Fountain (Raleigh, N.C.) as the second triangle-area member of the team. Eckstein was named to the North Carolina All-State first team and was the Tarheel Youth Golf Association State champion and the Mid Pines Junior champion in 2010. He also placed second at the 2010 NCISAA State 1A High School Championship and ninth at the American Junior Golf Association Charles Howell Junior Championship.
“Davidson has a long-standing tradition of having excellent academic and athletic programs,” Eckstein told Golfweek. “Coach Straub is an intelligent coach whose playing experience will help me further improve my game. The guys on the team are great people as well as solid players and I look forward to playing with them starting next fall.”
Blasey was a Washington Post All-Metropolitan Honorable Mention in 2010, was the runner-up at the Bobby Gorin Junior Championship and took eighth in the Maryland State Junior Championship. He also totaled three top-20 finishes in American Junior Golf Association tournaments. In 2009, he was a semi-finalist at the Bobby Bowers Junior Championship.
“I like Davidson's small size, strong academics and its golf practice facilities,” Blasey told Golfweek. “I also believe I can learn a lot from Coach Straub.”
Davidson will begin their spring schedule Feb. 21-22 at the Wexford Plantation Invitational in Florence, S.C.
