DAVIDSON, N.C. — Davidson head women's lacrosse coach Kim Wayne has announced junior Jenna Mugele (Baltimore, Md.), and seniors Lily Graham (Washington, D.C.) and Stella Davis (Phoenix, Md.) as team captains for the 2010-11 season as voted on by the team and coaching staff.
“I'm excited to announce Jenna, Lily and Stella as captains for this season,” said Wayne, who will be entering her third season after guiding the Wildcats to the National Lacrosse Conference championship game last year. “After an intense voting process all three captains were chosen to lead their team by the team itself as well as the coaching staff.”
The senior duo of Graham and Davis will anchor a strong returning defensive unit for the Wildcats. Graham had a breakout junior season, capped off by earning the NLC's top Defensive Player of the Year award. She was named to the NLC First Team, while starting a career-best 18 games. Graham picked up career highs in groundballs (23) and caused turnovers (13).
Fellow classmate Davis also garnered first-team NLC honors, one of five 'Cats last season do earn a nod on the first team. She was awarded the team's Coach's Award after starting 15 of her 16 games during her junior campaign. Davis was one of four players to grab over 20 draw controls, picking up a career-best 21, while forcing four turnovers and picking up 10 groundballs.
“Both Lily and Stella have grown into outstanding leaders,” said Wayne. “They understand the game, their team and what is expected of them as captains.”
Mugele assisted the Wildcats to a school-record 218 goals last year by matching her personal-best with 15 goals, good for fifth on the team. The junior attacker started a career-high 15 games and had a stretch of 10 straight contests with at least one goal. She was also a presence on defense, picking up 16 groundballs to go along with eight draw controls and four caused turnovers.
Davidson is coming off a successful 2010 that saw it go 9-9 overall and make a trip to the NLC finals. The Wildcats return 16 letterwinners for the 2011 season, including eight starters.
