Box Score

SPARTANBURG, S.C. -- Behind a season-high 21 kills from senior outside hitter Sarabeth Peele and double figures from classmate Jorden Benedict and junior Erin Lupfer, the Davidson Wildcat volleyball team opened the 2010 SoCon season with a 3-1 (25-21, 18-25, 25-23, 25-22) win over the Wofford Terriers Tuesday night at Benjamin Johnson Arena.

Peele topped 20 kills for the first time this season to lead Davidson (9-8, 1-0) to its first win in league play. The Wildcats also got season highs from both Benedict and Lupfer, who finished with 14 and 13 kills, respectively. Senior setter Hayley Lawson stayed with the theme, dishing out a season-best 52 assists, while classmate Jennifer Chamblee tallied 24 digs. Junior Christine Perzinski also finished in double figures with 15 digs.

Stacy Byrd and Catelyn Amende paced Wofford (10-9, 0-2) with 13 and 12 kills, while Bekah Dorsey and Tara Gough finished with 20 and 16 assists, respectively. Dorsey also led the defense with 14 digs, and Reagan Styles added 11.

The Wildcats won the first four points of the match, but Wofford climbed back in the set with a 5-2 run to get within a score, 6-5. Kills from Peele, Benedict and Lupfer along with an ace from sophomore Molly Crenshaw helped Davidson retake a 13-8 lead, but once again the Terriers pulled within a point, 13-12, aided by a pair of kills from Byrd. The Wildcats took control of the set with an 8-3 run, including three kills from Lupfer, to open a 21-15 lead, and three kills from Benedict helped Davidson put it away with a score of 25-21.

Davidson got off to another strong start in the second set, taking a 3-1 lead, but a kill from Amende and an ace by Melissa Kearse knotted the score. The teams traded points until, with the set tied at eight, Wofford won four straight points to take an 11-8 lead and led the rest of the way. Davidson got within two, 12-10, on a kill from Peele, but would get no closer as the Terriers won the set by a score of 25-18 to even the match.

For a third straight set, the Wildcats were off to a fast start, winning four straight points and extending the lead, 7-2, behind four kills by Peele. Wofford used an 8-2 stretch with kills from Amende, Amanda Liguori and Rachel Woodlee to take the lead, 10-9. Freshman outside hitter Caroline Brown tied the score, and the 'Cats won the next two, but the Terriers pulled back ahead, 16-13, on a 6-1 run. Davidson answered with a 5-2 run of its own to get within a point, 19-18, and the teams battled to the end for control of the match. Two kills by Brown and one from Lupfer put Davidson ahead, 23-21, but a Davidson error combined with a kill by Amende tied the set at 23. Benedict and Peele came through for Davidson, delivering the 25-23 win to put the 'Cats ahead 2-1 in the match.

Unlike the rest of the match, Davidson had to play from behind in the final set, falling behind 4-1 to start. Kills from Peele and Lupfer and two Terrier errors, though, tied the score at five, and the set featured 14 ties from that point. Davidson led by two four times and Wofford was up a point on as many occasions, but the decision went down to the wire. With the score all tied up at 22, Peele's 21st kill put Davidson ahead 23-22 before Lupfer gave the 'Cats a set-point chance, and a Terrier error lifted Davidson to a 25-22 win for the match.

After four matches on the road, the Wildcats return home this weekend, facing SoCon foe Samford at 2 p.m. Saturday at Belk Arena. Davidson will play its final non-conference match of the season when it hosts Gardner-Webb at 7 p.m. Tuesday, October 5.
