DAVIDSON, N.C. - The Davidson men's golf team will open the 2010 fall season at The Invitational at Ocean Course, hosted by the College of Charleston, Sept. 13-14 at Kiawah Island, S.C.
Davidson is among a 12-team tournament field, which includes Southern Conference rivals CofC and Western Carolina, as well as No. 42 North Carolina State, Vanderbilt, Coastal Carolina, Notre Dame, Saint Mary's (Calif.), Texas State, UAB, Maryland and Mercer.
The Ocean Course was ranked No. 25 in Golf Digest's 100 Greatest U.S. Golf Courses List and No. 4 on its Best Public Course List. With beautiful Atlantic coastline views from each hole, the course has played host to the 2007 Senior PGA and will host the 2012 PGA Championships.
Both tournament days will begin with shot-gun starts at 8:30 a.m. (ET) with 36 holes played on Monday and 18 holes on Tuesday.
Live six-hole scoring will be available on www.Golfstat.com.
Davidson returns it's entire spring 2010 team, while adding four freshmen.
Senior Bobby Urso and junior Jackson Taylor will look to continue to lead the 'Cats in 2010-11. Urso led Davidson with a 74.26 stroke average last season and posted a top finish of 15th at the Irish Creek Collegiate, where he fired an opening-round 67. Taylor was not far behind Urso statistically with a stroke average of 74.71. Taylor earned his first-career medalist trophy at the Seahawk Intercollegiate last season.
Sophomore John Skeadas III enjoyed an impressive rookie campaign, placing sixth at the Seahawk Intercollegiate. Senior Christopher Rollins led Davidson at the SoCon Championships, while sophomore Walker Allen was consistently competed in Davidson's top five. Seniors Ryan Crum and Adam Lewicki will also look to compete for playing time.
The returners will face stiff competition for playing time from a strong recruiting class. Ranked 67th in the nation by Golfweek amongst graduating high school seniors, Richard Fountain headlines the group. He recently shot a 12-under-par 59 at Carolina Country Club, which tied a club record held by former All-American and current PGA golfer Webb Simpson. He's joined by Charlotte Latin product James Bramlett, Belgian national team member Samuel Echikson and Canadian standout Ben Murray.
