DAVIDSON, N.C. — Senior forward Callan Elswick (Locust, Va.) of the Davidson women's soccer team was among the 30 candidates for the 2010 Lowe's Senior CLASS Award for soccer as announced by the awards committee today.
"To be included in this list of seniors is a tremendous achievement for Callan and the Davidson women's soccer program," said head coach Greg Ashton. "Callan has consistently demonstrated excellence in the classroom and also the desire to be involved in research projects during the summers which help different populations. She does this all while preparing to perform at the highest level on the field. The team is extremely proud to have Callan selected in the final group of 30 as it's a testament to her dedication and commitment to have balance in her life as well as being a Division I athlete."
Sixty NCAA men's and women's soccer student-athletes who excel both on and off the field were selected as candidates award in the two soccer divisions. Elswick, who is majoring in Interdisciplinary Studies and carries a 3.90 GPA, was give the Class of 1986 award last year. She had a breakout junior campaign that saw her set personal bests in starts (16), goals (2), assists (3) and points (7). Off the field, the senior has been very active. As a Latino Studies major, she is writing her thesis on the unionization of Latino migrant workers and their access to health care. This past spring, Elswick studied abroad doing an internship at Movimiento M-33, Cuernavaca, Mexico. The Premedical Advisory Committee at Davidson also awarded her the Daniel Blain Woods Memorial Award for exhibiting the qualities needed by a good doctor: wisdom, compassion, the desire to serve, the ability to analyze problems, integrity, academic excellence and an empathetic heart.
Two summers ago, Elswick observed at the 198 Youth Health Centre in Christchurch, New Zealand. She traveled to the Mwandi Mission Hospital in Zambia as part of the Davidson in Mwandi Program in order to observe the medical staff, give immunizations at outreach clinics, aid in a variety of community service projects, and participate in antiretroviral therapy counseling sessions. She also served an internship at the Pan American Health Organization.
From the list of 30 candidates, a national media committee will select 10 finalists for the 2010 Lowe's Senior CLASS Award at the midway point of the season. Those 10 names will then be placed on the official ballot for a nationwide vote. Fan balloting will be coupled with votes from coaches and media to determine the recipient of the award. Winners will be announced during the 2010 NCAA Division I Women's College Cup in Cary, N.C.
