DAVIDSON, N.C. - The Southern Conference honored Davidson with two of its long-standing academic awards at the league's annual meetings in Hilton Head last week. Davidson received the Barrett-Bonner Award for the 16th time in the award's 18-year history and won the Graduation Rate Award for the 10th time.
The Barrett-Bonner Award is given to the school that places the highest percentage of its student-athletes on the league's academic honor roll. The award was first presented in 1994, for the 1992-93 academic year. The award is named after Col. John G. Barrett, faculty athletics representative at VMI from 1965-87, and Dr. Francis W. Bonner, faculty athletics representative at Furman from 1968-90.
Davidson has claimed the Graduation Rate Award for the last nine years, sharing the honor with Wofford in 1999-00. Since its inception in 1994, the Graduation Rate Award is presented to the member institution with the highest graduation rate for its student-athletes over the past five years as recorded in the annual NCAA Graduation Rates Report.
“Once again, we're very proud of our outstanding athletes and faculty as they set the pace for academic success,” said Director of Athletics Jim Murphy.
