DAVIDSON, N.C. — Davidson College juniors Allison Drutchas (Bloomfield Hills, Mich.) and Danny Weiss (Ft. Myers, Fla.) recently were named two of 23 student-athletes that were recipients of the fifth annual Coleman Lew Award as announced by the Coleman Lew & Associates, Inc., a national executive search firm, and the Southern Conference. Recipients will be recognized at the SoCon Honors Dinner, June 1, at the Crowne Plaza Resort in Hilton Head, S.C.
The award recognizes student-athletes from each of the Southern Conference's 12 member institutions. Coaches, faculty athletic representatives and senior women administrators nominate prospective candidates based on leadership, academic excellence and athletic achievement in both the college environment and the community. Athletic directors and representatives from Coleman Lew & Associates conducted one-on-one interviews with the finalists before determining the award winners.
Drutchas had a breakout junior campaign in helping lead the Davidson women's soccer program to its fourth SoCon Tournament Title and the program's first NCAA Tournament appearance. The junior had career bests in starts (21), shots (52), goals (3) and points (8). An academic All-SoCon team member for the second straight year, Drutchas helped lead the 'Cats to a 1-0 SoCon finals win over College of Charleston in double overtime by assisting on the game-winner in the 198th minute. She also assisted on the game-winner in a 1-0 win at High Point, Sept. 13.
Drutchas' junior season also saw the midfielder score her first collegiate goal in a 5-0 win over Francis Marion, Sept. 6. She added single goals in wins against Wofford and Chattanooga later in the season. The junior was one of eight Wildcats to start at least 20 games.
Junior first baseman Danny Weiss led the Wildcats with a .368 batting average, the seventh-best individual average in the SoCon, and slugged a team-high .597. Limited by injury which forced him to miss the final 12 games of the season, Weiss still finished among team leaders with 17 multi-hit games and nine multi-RBI games, third in each. In 39 games, he recorded 53 hits, 42 runs, 11 doubles, two triples, six home runs, six stolen bases and 35 RBI. Weiss also led the team with a .466 on-base percentage.
Weiss tied a school record with three doubles against NC Central, Apr. 17, and was one of three Wildcats to hit two home runs in one game, against Wofford, Mar. 13. His season-high 17 putouts against Bryant on March 6 was also an individual game-high across the SoCon for the 2010 season. Weiss finished second on the team with 177 putouts and committed just three errors for a .984 fielding percentage.
