DAVIDSON, N.C. – The academic accolades continued for the Davidson wrestling team Thursday as the Collegiate Sports Information Directors Association announced the election of Ben Altman to the 2010 CoSIDA/ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District First Team for District 3 at-large sports. As a first-team selection, Altman advances to the national ballot for Academic All-America consideration.
A four-year starter at 125 pounds, the recent graduate posted a 3.87 cumulative grade point average majoring in mathematics while compiling an 85-58 career record on the mat. He was a recipient of a Bryan Scholarship, Davidson's top scholarship for student-athletes, and received the William G. McGavock Award for accomplishment and promise in mathematics at Davidson's Spring Convocation. Altman plans to pursue graduate study in the applied mathematics of finance.
Altman was the runner-up at 125 pounds at the 2008 Southern Conference Championships and placed third in 2007 en route to SoCon Freshman of the Year honors. The Wilmington, Del. native was also a 2008 NWCA All-Academic team selection, a three-time Academic All-SoCon team selection and a four-time SoCon Student Athlete of the Week. As a senior, Altman totaled the second most wins on the team with 19 after leading the team with 16 wins during the 2008-09 season.
Altman helped the Wildcats post the fifth-best team GPA in Division I wrestling for the second consecutive season as the National Wrestling Coaches Association announced its 2009-10 Division I All-Academic Top 30 list in early May. Davidson has been ranked in the Top 30 the past five years.
Altman is attempting to become Davidson's second Academic All-American this season after Charlie Reiter was named to the 2009 men's soccer Academic All-America first team in November. He is the fifth Wildcat to receive All-District honors this year, joining Reiter, Callan Elswick (women's soccer), Aaron Saltzman (football) and Peter Kidwell (football). Altman is the first Davidson wrestler to be named to the All-District team.
The at-large category includes women's bowling, women's crew, men's and women's fencing, women's field hockey, men's and women's golf, men's and women's gymnastics, men's and women's ice hockey, men's and women's lacrosse, men's and women's rifle, men's and women's skiing, men's and women's swimming, men's and women's tennis, men's volleyball, men's and women's water polo, and men's wrestling.
To be eligible for the ESPN The Magazine Academic All-America team, a student-athlete must be a varsity starter or key reserve, maintain a cumulative grade point average of 3.30 on a scale of 4.00, have reached sophomore athletic and academic standings at his/her current institution and be nominated by his/her sports information director. Since the program's inception in 1952, CoSIDA has bestowed Academic All-America honors on more than 14,000 student-athletes in Divisions I, II, III and NAIA, covering all NCAA championship sports.
Nominations and voting for the All-America programs are conducted by members of the College Sports Information Directors of America. Selections for the Academic All-America team are scheduled to be announced Tuesday, June 8.
