DAVIDSON, N.C. - The NCAA formally released Public Recognition Awards Wednesday for the 2009-10 sports teams achieving the highest level of academic performance in Division I, and the list included a Southern Conference-leading 13 Davidson College athletic programs, including men's basketball, women's basketball and football.
Davidson is one of 19 programs out of the 331 that participate in Division I to place 10 or more of its athletic teams on the list this year. In men's basketball, the Wildcats are one of just 12 teams to receive the Public Recognition Award since the inception of the NCAA Academic Progress Rating (APR) in 2006.
“This national recognition is a tribute to the efforts of our outstanding students and the mentoring they receive from our talented faculty,” said Director of Athletics Jim Murphy. “We are very proud of them all.”
Each year the NCAA honors selected Division I sports teams by publicly recognizing their latest multiyear APR. This announcement is part of the overall Division I academic reform effort and is intended to highlight teams who demonstrate a commitment to academic progress and retention of student-athletes by achieving the top APRs within their respective sports. Specifically, these teams posted multiyear APRs in the top 10 percent of all squads in each sport.
High-performing teams receiving public recognition awards this year posted APR scores ranging from 978 to a perfect 1,000. The number of teams in some sports may exceed 10 percent depending on how many achieved perfect scores. The most recent APRs are multi-year rates based on scores from the 2005-06, 2006-07, 2007-08 and 2008-09 academic years.
The following Davidson programs posted multi-year APR scores in the top 10 percent of all squads in their respective sports:
Men's Basketball
Men's Cross Country
Men's Football
Men's Golf
Men's Tennis
Men's Track, Indoor
Men's Track, Outdoor
Women's Basketball
Women's Cross Country
Women's Field Hockey
Women's Soccer
Women's Track, Indoor
Women's Volleyball
The APR provides a real-time look at a team's academic success each semester by tracking the academic progress of each student-athlete on scholarship. The APR accounts for eligibility, retention and graduation and provides a measure of each team's academic performance.
A total of 841 teams earned NCAA Public Recognition Awards, up from 767 teams last year, while 228 of the 331 Division I colleges and universities placed at least one team on the top APR list. Another six of the 50 schools that offer athletics in more than one division placed Division I teams on the list.
The Southern Conference placed 42 programs from nine league members on the list, marking the third consecutive year the conference has seen an increase in the number of programs earning the academic distinction.
Multiyear APRs for all Division I sports teams, including the teams receiving public recognition, will be announced at a later date. That announcement also will include immediate and historical penalties for low-performing teams.
