DAVIDSON, N.C. -- After becoming the first Davidson swimmer to compete at the NCAA Division I Championships, junior Lindsey Martin has been named to the 2010 Mid-Major All-American Team, while freshman Drew Onken earned Honorable Mention honors, as announced by Collegeswimming.com.
Martin is one of the 16 women honored based on their qualification for the 2010 NCAA Division I Championships, the fewest number of honorees in the six years of the program. George Mason, Harvard, Miami-Ohio, Princeton, Southern Illinois, Towson, Navy, UC Santa Barbara, UNC Wilmington, Western Kentucky, William & Mary and Yale were also represented on the women's side, while the nine men honored represented Cal Poly, Columbia, Harvard, Miami-Ohio, Princeton, Rider, Navy, UC Davis and UNC Wilmington.
After earning Most Outstanding Performer honors on the strength of three individual titles at the 2010 CCSA Championships, Martin was invited to participate in the 2010 NCAA D-I Championships. She became Davidson's first ever NCAA participant, competing for the Wildcats in three events - the 50, 100 and 200, on the campus of Purdue University, setting personal and school-bests in the 100 and the 200 freestyles.
Martin was named an Honorable Mention Academic All-American after the 2008-09 season, as designated by the CSCAA and All-America Honorable Mention by CollegeSwimming.com after her freshman and sophomore seasons.
Onken earned his Honorable Mention status by earning NCAA 'B' time standards during the 2009-10 season. Onken was named Most Outstanding Freshman designation at the 2010 CCSA Championships, where he won the 400 IM with an NCAA B-cut time and set Davidson records in the 200 IM, 400 IM and 200 breaststroke and broke the school's record in the 200 breaststroke. He bettered his school-record times in both the 400 IM and the 200 breaststroke at the University of Georgia's Bulldog Invitational to conclude his impressive freshman season.
For a fourth season, Princeton's Alicia Aemisegger was named Women's Mid-Major Swimmer of the Year. Navy's Adam Meyer was named Men's Mid-Major Swimmer of the Year.
Mid-Major institutions are designated as colleges or universities that are not affiliated with a Bowl Championship Series (BCS) conference as well as those institutions awarding less than half of the maximum-allowable scholarships (seven for women, five for men).
