FLORENCE, S.C. – Bobby Urso posted a career-best six-under par 66 to lead Davidson in the final round of the Southern Conference Men's Golf Championship on Tuesday at the Country Club of South Carolina. The Wildcats finished 10th with a three-round score of 904.
Urso's 66 was the low round of the day and gave the 'Cats their best team score of the tournament, 300, after they carded a pair of 302's in the first two rounds. The junior captain scored five birdies on the front nine and then three birdies and two bogeys on the back nine. Urso did not compete in the first round and shot a five-over par 77 Monday. Individual medalist Austin Reeves (71+66+70 = 207, -9) of Furman was the only other competitor to score a 66 during the tournament.
Junior Christopher Rollins was Davidson's top individual finisher in 35th place with a 226 (71+74+81). Freshman John Skeadas III carded a final-round 73 to finish at 230 (79+78+73). Sophomore Jackson Taylor (232) and freshman Walker Allen (238) rounded out the 'Cats finishers.
Furman's Reeves was the only golfer in the field to beat par in all three rounds, totaling nine-under par 207 to claim a five-stroke victory, the second of his collegiate career. The junior birdied five of the first 11 holes to build an insurmountable lead over the field.
In addition to Reeves, Furman boasted three other golfers in the top eight as the Paladins claimed their 13th Southern Conference championship in program history and the first since 2004. The Paladins' effort also marked the lowest team score (849) in the four years that the event has been held at the Country Club of South Carolina and the 16-stroke margin of victory was the greatest since 2001.
Furman head coach Todd Satterfield was chosen as the league's Coach of the Year by his peers, while Chattanooga sophomore Stephan Jaeger was honored as the Player of the Year. Wofford's Mark Joye was named Freshman of the Year.
Georgia Southern (865) edged UNC Greensboro (867) to grab the runner-up spot while Elon (874), Western Carolina (878) and College of Charleston (886) filled slots four through six. Rounding out the field were Chattanooga (887), Appalachian State (891), Wofford (895), Davidson (904) and Samford (912).
With the win, Furman earns an automatic bid to the 2010 NCAA Men's Golf Regionals, which begin May 20 at six sites around the country.
