DAVIDSON, N.C. – Junior captain Bobby Urso and sophomore Jackson Taylor are set to lead the Wildcats at the 74th annual Southern Conference Men's Golf Championship, held at the Country Club of South Carolina in Florence, S.C., Sunday through Monday.
Scores will be entered every three holes and viewable online at Golfstatresults.com.
The first round of the championship will tee off on the par 72, 7,062-yard course at 8 a.m. on Sunday, April 18. The second and third rounds will also begin at 8:00 a.m. on Monday, April 19 and Tuesday, April 20. The team champion will receive the league's automatic bid into the NCAA Division I Men's Golf Championship. The conference medalist will also qualify individually for NCAA postseason play should their institution not advance to regionals.
Taylor leads Davidson with a 74.33 stroke average through 21 rounds of golf this season, but Urso is not far behind at 74.52. Taylor's top performance came in the first tournament of the spring, the Wexford Plantation Intercollegiate, where he tied with Wake Forest's Lee Bedford for individual medalist honors. Urso shot a career-best 67 in the first round of the Irish Creek Collegiate, Davidson's last outing.
Freshman John Skeadas III ranks third on the team this season and tied with Urso for the team lead at even-par when the 'Cats played at the Country Club of South Carolina in the season opening Spring Hill Suites Intercollegiate in September. Junior Christopher Rollins and freshman Walker Allen round out Davidson's top-five for the season.
Davidson placed seventh in the SoCon Championships in 2009, led by since-graduated all-conference performer Michael Saari.
Chattanooga is the three-time defending champion at the event, as the Mocs edged Georgia Southern by two strokes to claim the 2009 title. Chattanooga which enters the tournament ranked No. 34 in the nation by Golfstat, has won one tournament in 2009-10 and returns its top three golfers from last season's title-winning team.
Furman, Georgia Southern, Wofford and UNC Greensboro all enter the event with top-100 national rankings and hope to play spoilers against Chattanooga.
Also participating in the 11-team event are Appalachian State, College of Charleston, Elon, Samford and Western Carolina.
