DAVIDSON, N.C. — Seniors Eric Noble (Fayetteville, N.C.) and Sam Burns (Banner Elk, N.C.) both picked up singles and doubles wins in helping carry the Davidson men's tennis team to their fifth straight win with a 4-3 match victory over visiting Georgia Southern in Southern Conference action on Saturday afternoon.
Davidson ran its record to 9-3 overall and 3-1 in league matches. The 'Cats have dominated play on their home court, owning a 9-1 record and currently are 5-1 on their eight-match homestand. The five wins in row is the longest streak since the 1999 squad rattled off five straight. Twice during the 2008 campaign, Davidson had four-match win streaks.
Georgia Southern fell to 4-12 overall and remained winless in the SoCon at 0-5.
Noble and Burns helped the 'Cats sweep all three doubles matches for the sixth time this year by earning wins at No. 1 and 3. Noble and freshman Joe Schafer (Orchard Park, N.Y.) won their fifth straight together with an 8-2 win, while Burns teamed up with Chris Mark (Union City, Calif.) for their first SoCon win with an 8-5 triumph.
Finishing out the sweep was the duo of sophomore Calum Gee (Ayr, Scotland) and junior Walker Lyons (Wallingford, Pa.), who remained perfect in league matches and tallied their team-leading 10th doubles win with an 8-4 victory at No. 2. The pair also have won their last five straight matches.
The doubles point proved to be the difference as the Eagles and Wildcats split the six singles matches. GSU took the top three spots, but the 'Cats earned wins at No. 4-6 to seal up the win. Noble won a thrilling two-set, two-tiebreaker match over Alain Garrido, 7-6, 7-6 at No. 4. The senior has won three of his last four singles matches.
Gee continued his hot play of late, winning his career-best ninth straight match behind a convincing 6-0, 6-4 victory at No. 5 over Thomas Bekkers. Gee is 9-1 on the season and perfect in SoCon matches at 4-0. The sophomore's last four singles wins have been straight set victories.
Burns kept pace with Gee in the unbeaten category in league matches and pushed his own winning streak out to five straight, scoring a 2-6, 6-4, 6-1 win at No. 6. The senior is 8-1 on the season in singles action.
Seeing his five-match singles streak come to an end was freshman Mark as he dropped a 6-4, 7-5 decision, while fellow classmate Schafer went the distance in his match, playing a tiebreaker in all three sets, only to come up short in the final tiebreaker.
The Wildcats wrap up the weekend with a 1 p.m. home match tomorrow, Mar. 28, vs. College of Charleston.
