Schmitt, Pagonis Earn Top-Five Finishes at 49er Classic

CHARLOTTE, N.C. – Charlie Schmitt and Ryan Hopkins both placed in the top-five of the 3000-meter run to lead the Davidson men's track and field team on the final day of the Charlotte 49er Classic at Irwin Belk Track & Field center. Demetrios Pagonis qualified for the USA Junior Outdoor Track & Field Championships Friday.
The times rank among the fastest in Davidson history as Schmitt took third in eight minutes, 39.53 seconds, and Hopkins placed fourth in 8:42.94.
Bryce Jones placed seventh for the Wildcats in the pole vault with a mark of 13-1 ½ (4.00m).
Top-10 finishes by Peter Bruton and Demetrios Pagonis led the 'Cats Friday.
Bruton finished the 1500-meter run in 3:56.81 to place eighth, while Pagonis placed ninth in the 5000-meter run in 14:58.42, which qualified him for the National Outdoor Track & Field Championships. Both times rank among the top-ten all-time at Davidson. Schmitt also was strong in the 1500m, taking 11th in 3:58.97 On Saturday, Bruton took 16th in the 800-meter run in 1:56.02
Mordecai Scott led the 'Cats in the sprints with a time of 11.24 in the 100-meter dash and 22.68 in the 200-meter dash.
Davidson returns to action Friday and Saturday when the team sends representatives to both the Raleigh Relays and the Winthrop Invitational.
