DAVIDSON, N.C. – In a match that was moved to Davidson College due to the rain, the Wildcats saw their two-match win streak come to an end as the No. 65 Winthrop Eagles captured a 5-2 win on Thursday evening at the Knobloch Tennis Center in women's tennis action.

The match was originally schedule to be played at Winthrop, but was moved to Davidson, which has indoor courts, after rain forced both teams to relocate prior to the start of the match.

Davidson (7-3), which owns a 16-4 led in the all-time series, saw the Eagles take their second win in a row in the series by sweeping the doubles play and then taking singles wins at No. 2-5 for the three-point win.

Winthrop (5-5) won its second straight overall after dropping four straight, all to opponents ranked in the top-30 in the nation, prior to their wins vs. Presbyterian and Davidson.

The senior tandem of Virginia Berry (Spartanburg, S.C.) and Teresa Wang (Charlotte, N.C.) saw their two-match doubles win streak halted after an 8-3 defeat at No. 1, and the Wildcats also lost two matches of 8-4 at the other two positions.

Berry did get the 'Cats on the board with one of their points with a straight set 6-4, 6-0 win over Elizaveta Zaytseva at No. 1 singles. It was the senior's third win in a row as she ran her record to 6-3.

Davidson's final point came from Samantha Galainena (Burr Ridge, Ill.), who also ran her singles mark to 6-3 after a 6-3, 6-4 win at No. 6.

Suffering her first defeat of the season was Stephani Synn (Conover, N.C.) as the sophomore was on a seven-match win streak to open the year. Synn gave Giovanna Portiolli all she could handle at the No. 4 singles spot, forcing a third-set tiebreaker. The sophomore dropped her first set, 6-4, but came back for a 6-3 win, to force the final set. In the third set, it went all the way to a 6-all tie, forcing a tiebreaker, which Portiolli ended up securing to drop Synn to 7-1 on the season in singles play.

Davidson continues a busy week with two matches this weekend as it opens up Southern Conference play. It will first play host to Samford on Saturday at 11 a.m., before finishing out the weekend with a 1 p.m. match against Western Carolina on Sunday, Mar. 14.
