INDIANAPOLIS – The Southern Conference champion at 133 pounds, Alex Radsky of Davidson, will face the Big Ten fifth-place finisher, Ian Paddock of No. 3 Ohio State, in the first round of the 2010 NCAA Wrestling Championships at the Qwest Center in Omaha, Neb., March 18-20.
Radsky (Worthington, Ohio) earned an automatic bid by winning the Southern Conference championship at 133 pounds Saturday. He is Davidson's first individual conference champion since Kerry Keith won at 191 pounds for the Wildcats in 1969. He is also Davidson's first representative at the NCAA Wrestling Championships since Ian Kaplan received at-large bids in 1998 and 1999.
A junior, Radsky, has enjoyed a career year. His record of 17-4 is a career best, and his winning percentage of .810 is the third-best all-time at Davidson. Radsky has won 14 of his last 15 bouts, including the last 10 straight.
Radsky entered the SoCon tournament as a No. 2 seed after going 3-2 in conference matches, but was able to defeat UNC Greensboro's Angel Garcia with an 11-8 decision in the first round before knocking off top-seed Josh Statum of Chattanooga, 3-2 for the title.
Paddock is a freshman who was a four-time state champion in New York. He has posted a 22-12 record and placed fifth at the Big Ten Championships after entering as a No. 7 seed.
The winner of the match between Radsky and Paddock will face the winner of the match between No. 1 seed Kyle Ness (Minnesota) and Sean Clair (Eastern Michigan). Ness claimed the Big Ten Championship and is undefeated (26-0) this season.
Session I (10:30 a.m. EST) and Session II (5:30 p.m. EST) of the tournament will be streamed live Thursday on NCAA.com. Session III (10:30 a.m. EST) and Session IV (7 p.m. EST) on Friday and Session V (11 a.m. EST) on Saturday will be broadcast live on ESPNU.
