
Thompson, Aleksandravicius Tally Honors By SoCon Women's Basketball Coaches

DAVIDSON, N.C. — After outstanding senior and freshman campaigns, Davidson's Alex Thompson (Asheville, N.C.) and Sophia Aleksandravicius (Pound Ridge, N.Y.) were awarded by being named to the all-conference and all-freshman teams as voted on by the Southern Conference women's basketball coaches. The media voted Thompson onto the second team.
Thompson makes it five straight seasons a Wildcat has been named to the coaches all-league team, while Aleksandravicius is the first freshman since Kelly Gassie in 2006 to be named to the all-freshman team.
Helping Davidson to a 12-8 league mark, Thompson had quite a senior year. The Wildcats' starting point guard led the team in scoring, averaging a career-best 12.7 points per game, while dishing out 95 assists, good for fourth in the league at 3.4 per game.
Thompson's senior season saw her become the 13th Wildcat in program history to eclipse the 1,000-point mark when she dropped in 16 points at Chattanooga, Feb. 15. In addition, the senior moved into second place all-time in the Wildcat record books in both assists (337) and made-three-pointers (158), while currently ranking tops on the charts in free throw (.833) and three-point (.411) accuracy.
Last year as a junior, Thompson tied a single-game school mark in points with 35 at Appalachian State, while in the same game, setting a new school bench mark in made three-balls with nine.
This season, Thompson has score in double figures in 20 of the 'Cats' 28 games, including dropping in 20-plus points four times. She also registered two of her three career double-doubles this year, including a 10-point, career-high 12-rebound effort in an 18-point win at Georgia Southern, Jan. 18.
Ranked 37th in the nation at her position coming in as a freshman, Aleksandravicius lived up to her high ranking as one of the best freshman in the SoCon. The 6-4 forward is second on the team in scoring at 11.8 points per game, while pacing the Wildcats with an 8.2 rebounding average, good for third-best in the conference.
Aleksandravicius was also a double-double machine during the regular season, finishing with a team-best 11. In her first SoCon game, the freshman went off for a season-best 28 points and hauled in 13 rebounds to lead Davidson over Furman. Two games later in her home debut, Aleksandravicius' reached her season-high in boards with a game-best 16 while chipping in 19 points vs. Appalachian State.
The Wildcat forward finished the regular season scoring in double figures 16 times, including reaching the 20-point mark four times.
Besides being one of the Wildcats' main scoring options, Aleksandravicius has also been a force down on the blocks on the defensive side. Her 47 blocks, fourth-best in the SoCon, are tied for fourth-most in Davidson's single season record book. The freshman also ranks second in the league in defensive rebounds with 163 of her 229 coming on that end.
Chattanooga, which won its 11th straight regular-season league title, had two players on the coaches all-conference team, including Player of the Year Shanara Hollinquest, who also won the award in the media voting. Samford also placed two on the 11-member coaches team.
The Defensive Player of the Year was given to Tonia Gerty of College of Charleston, while Elon's Ali Ford was named the Freshman of the Year.
Appalachian State head coach Darcie Vincent was honored by her peers as Coach of the Year and won the award in the media ballot, while Megan Wilderotter of Samford was named the recipient of the Ann Lashley Inspiration Award, which honors a student-athlete or coach who has shown outstanding courage or service.
Davidson opens up the SoCon Tournament with a first-round matchup against Furman (6-23, 4-16 SoCon) on Thursday, Mar. 4. The Wildcats (14-14, 12-8 SoCon) will play the third game of the day, roughly 30 minutes after the conclusion of game two, No. 8 Western Carolina vs. No. 9 UNC Greensboro, which follows the first game of the day featuring No. 7 Wofford vs. No. 10 Elon at 1 p.m.
