DAVIDSON, N.C. — Georgia Southern's Carolyn Whitney sparked a 19-4 run in the early stages of the second half with three treys during the spurt to gave the Eagles a 10-point lead and Davidson was never able to recover, seeing its 13-game win streak in the all-time series come to an end, 58-47, on Monday evening at John M. Belk Arena in women's Southern Conference basketball action.
The Wildcats entered the game winners of their last eight straight at home vs. the Eagles, but could not get in a rythmn all game, falling to 13-14 overall and 11-8 in SoCon play. They also dropped out of a fifth-place tie with GSU, which ran its road win streak to six in a row to improve to 17-11 and 12-7 in league action.
With Davidson leading 23-18 to start the second half, Georgia Southern rattled off a quick 8-0 run behind two of Whitney's three shots from behind the arc to take a 26-23 lead at the 17:44 mark.
Whitney added her third trey with 14:41 left, and GSU ended its 19-4 run with a pair of J'Lisia Ogburn free throws for a 37-27 lead and 12:46 left in the game.
All 11 of Whitney's points were scored in the second half as she helped the Eagles outscore Davidson, 40-24, in th half. Joining the guard was Jamie Navarro, who netted 12 of her 19 points in the half, and Ogburn, who had 10 of her 12 total points.
Freshman Sophia Aleksandravicius (Pound Ridge, N.Y.) paced the Wildcats with her second 16-point contest in the last three, and just missed out on a double-double, getting nine boards. Davidson held a 45-36 advantage on the glass, with 16 of those rebounds on the offensive end, but the 'Cats mustered just eight second-chance points.
Davidson saw the GSU lead increase to 13 points at 42-29, but followed with a 7-0 run to cut the deficit to six at 42-36 with 8:04 remaining on the clock. The Eagles though, pushed the lead back out to 12 points later on an Ogburn layup and the Wildcats got no closer than seven points the rest of the way.
The first half saw both teams get off to a very slow start as the score was just 9-8 through the first 10 minutes of action.
Ashley Lax (Little Rock, Ark.) helped the Wildcats shake off a 1-for-19 shooting performance in those 10 minutes by netting 11 of her 15 total points in the first period.
Lax brought Davidson back from a 14-8 hole by draining back-to-back three-balls to tie things up at 14-all with 6:13 left. Things would go back-and-forth from there, until the 'Cats closed the half on a 6-0 run with a pair of threes, the last one coming from Lax before the buzzer, to give Davidson a 23-18 lead.
After shooting 50 percent two days earlier, Davidson was held to 27.5 percent (14-of-51) for the game, which including just a 22.2 percent performance in the first half.
The Wildcats close out the regular season with 2 p.m. game this Saturday, Feb. 28, vs. Furman. They will honor their three seniors, Julia Paquette (Stockbridge, Ga.), Alex Thompson (Asheville, N.C.) and Monica Laune (Ashland, Neb.) for Senior Day.
