Wildcat Men Lead, Women Second After Day One at the CCSA Championships

Day One Results
KNOXVILLE, Tenn. -- The Wildcats set 10 school records, including three CCSA records, and won six events on the first full day of competition at the 2010 Coastal Collegiate Swimming Association championships at the University of Tennessee's Allan Jones Intercollegiate Aquatic Center.
The Davidson men are in first place with 276 points, followed by the College of Charleston with 254 points and Gardner-Webb with 205. The Wildcat women trail Florida Gulf Coast 232-218 after Thursday's competition, while Gardner-Webb is in third with 160.5.
In the opening session, the Wildcats set four new Davidson records and a pair of CCSA records, while earning 16 spots in the championship finals and seven spots in the consolation finals. They finished the day with 10 school records and six event titles.
"The Wildcats have much to be proud of after today's competition," head coach John Young said. "Momentum can swing quickly in a three-day championship. I'm excited to see if we can build on today's accomplishments."
Junior Lindsey Martin won the 50 free for a third straight season with a new Davidson and CCSA-record, NCAA-B cut time of 22.57, and classmate Bryan Droll made it a sweep with a title in the men's 50 free behind a school-record time of 20.49. Sophomore Ben Lane won the 3-meter event for a second straight season, with a score of 311.25.The Wildcats also swept the 200 free relays and the Davidson men won the 400 medley relay.
Freshman Drew Onken and sophomore Lauren Kamperman swam Davidson-bests in the 200 IM, and junior Jessica Delgehausen set a new school record in the 500 free. Freshman Kelsi Hobbs and sophomore Geoffrey Peitz broke Davidson records with leadoff backstroke legs in their respective 400 medley relays, both of which set new school bests.
Along with Martin's 50 freestyle, the Wildcat women's 200 free relay and the Wildcat men's 400 medley relay are all new CCSA bests.
Junior Emily Castle, freshman Jean DeOrnellas, sophomore Casey Van Tassell and Martin combined for a Davidson and CCSA-record time of 1:33.37 to win the first final of the night in the 200 freestyle relay. Peitz, junior Patrick Whitman, freshman Wills Cooper and Droll made it a sweep for the Wildcats, winning the relay with a time of 1:21.77.
In the 500 free, Delgehausen finished second in the prelims with a time of 4:58.04, followed immediately by senior Caitlin Sheetz, whose time of 4:58.81 was good for third. The pair went back-to-back in the finals, finishing 3rd and 4th with times of 4:56.99 and 5:00.18, respectively. Delgehausen's time was a school record, besting the time of 4:57.85 by Sheetz last season. Freshman Lillie Seifart finished in seventh place with a time of 5:04.32. Freshman Allison Cottle and sophomore Meagan Madden each earned a spot in the consolation final, finishing 14th (5:09.56) and 15th (5:13.82) in the evening session.
On the men's side, sophomore Curtis Chaney finished fourth in the 500 free prelims with a time of 4:35.92 to earn a spot in the championship final, while sophomore Brian Seo (4:49.77, 12th) and freshman Chris Leonard (5:00.69, 13th) advanced to the consolation final. Chaney finished second in the evening session with a time of 4:35.93, while Seo was 11th (4:46.08) and Leonard (4:58.77) was 13th in the consolation.
Kamperman swam a Davidson-record time of 2:06.06, finishing fourth in the 200 IM prelim to advance to the championship final, and Onken swam a school-best time of 1:49.79 and finished first in the event's prelim. Both were faster in the evening session, with Onken finishing second with a time of 1:49.56 and Kamperman finishing 4th in a time of 2:05.12.
Onken was followed immediately in the prelim by Peitz, who finished a spot behind as well in the championship final with a time of 1:50.07, also under his former Davidson standard of 1:51.88. Classmate David Kerman finished fifth in the championship final with a time of 1:54.98.
Martin and Droll set school and CCSA records with their times in the 50 free prelims and came back to win their events in the evening session. Martin swam 22.79 in the prelims, bettering her school and league-best time of 22.99 from Dec. 5, 2008, but was even faster in the nightcap, winning her third straight individual title in the event with a time of 22.57. Droll's time of 20.43 bettered Whitman's Davidson-best time of 20.66 from Feb. 19 and El-Amin Mujahid's time of 20.52 from the 2007-08 season, and he won the event with a time of 20.49 in the championship final.
Castle also competed in the championship final, finishing fifth with a time of 23.18, and DeOrnellas placed seventh with a time of 23.94. As he did in the prelims, Whitman finished second in the final with a time of 20.86, and Cooper (5th, 21.02) and Williams (7th, 21.16) also competed in the final. Senior Brad Carman (21.13, 10th) and junior Tennant Brastow (21.54, 13th) swam in the consolation final.
The Wildcat men's team of Peitz, Onken, Williams and Droll won the 400 medley relay with a school-record time of 3:19.62, and the Davidson medley of Hobbs, senior Caroline Curtiss, Castle and Martin finished second on the women's side in a Davidson-best time of 3:47.28. Both Peitz and Hobbs also set new Davidson records with their leadoff backstroke legs, with splits of 57.48 and 50.06, respectively.
Lane won the 3-meter event with a score of 311.25, while Nick Taylor (5th, 142.47) and Tim Keating (6th, 110.97) also competed. On the 1-meter event, senior Linnea Buttermore finished fourth with a score of 216.81 and classmate Kelsey Chisholm was fifth with a score of 214.56.
The Wildcats will return to action with prelims at 10 a.m. and finals at 6 p.m. once again, on the second day of competition at Allan Jones Intercollegiate Aquatic Center.
