DAVIDSON, N.C. -- The 2010 baseball season opens with a three-game homestand as the Davidson Wildcats host the Georgetown Hoyas this weekend at Wilson Field. First pitch for Friday's game, the season-opener for both teams, is scheduled for 6 p.m. Game times are set for 2 p.m. on Saturday and 1 p.m. on Sunday.
About the Series:
The Hoyas and Wildcats have played 16 games, all at Wilson Field, with Davidson holding an 11-5 advantage.
The teams last met on Feb. 24, 2008, with Georgetown winning a 13-2 victory. Davidson, though, won the first meeting of the season, 10-3, the day before. Before that, the Wildcats had won the last five games, with their last loss to the Hoyas coming on Feb. 19 (4-7), the middle game of a three-game series victory.
About the Hoyas
Georgetown finished the 2009 season with a 17-34 overall record and went 8-18 in Big East play. The Hoyas, who return all but one starter in the field, were led at the plate by junior catcher Erick Fernandez, who batted .349 (59-169) with five home runs and 28 RBI. Junior infielder Sean Lamont hit a team-leading 14 home runs and drove in a team-best 50 RBI.
The Hoyas also return a pair of 10-game starters on the mound in senior Tim Adleman and sophomore Will Harris. Adleman, slated to start Friday, finished with a 4-8 record a season ago with a 5.40 ERA and a 66-23 strikeout-to-walk ratio. Saturday's slated starter, Harris finished 3-9 with a 6.44 ERA a season ago. Junior Tommy Isaacs, who started one game but led the team with 16 appearances out of the bullpen in 2009 and went 2-2 with a 5.40 ERA, is scheduled to start Sunday's contest.
About the Wildcats
Davidson finished 18-31 in 2009 and went 11-16 in Southern Conference play, finishing in seventh place and earning a spot in the 2009 Southern Conference Tournament. Offensively, Davidson will need to replace the loss of six starters in the field, including 22nd round-selection Zach Kayne, who led the team with a .340 average and a new school-record 22 doubles, and Chase FitzPatrick, who led in both home runs (14) and RBI (44).
The Wildcat offense will need to get production from junior Danny Weiss, who was named to the All-Southern Conference Second Team in 2009 and this season's All-Southern Conference preseason Second Team. Weiss batted .323 (51-for-158) last year with six home runs, 14 doubles and 37 RBI. After earning a spot on the All-Southern Conference Freshman Team in 2009, sophomore Drew Gadaire, who hit 11 home runs as a freshman, will once again be batting in the middle of the lineup for the Wildcats.
On the mound, Davidson returns 14 pitchers, graduating just two in 2009. Senior Thomas Middour is slated to start Friday's game, after starting a team-high 13 games and finishing 2-8 with a 7.11 ERA last season. Junior Ian Horkley is the Wildcats' scheduled Saturday starter, and sophomore Ryan Overcash will get Sunday's assignment. Horkley went 2-2 with a 6.80 ERA in 2009 in five starts and 22 appearances out of the pen last season, while Overcash finished 1-2 with a 6.15 ERA in six starts and 19 appearances. The Wildcats also will once again rely heavily on junior Mike Frongello, who set a school record with 38 appearances in 2009.
Next Up
Davidson travels to Durham to face N.C. Central for the first of four times this season, Tuesday at 4 p.m. The Wildcats return to Wilson Field for four straight games, hosting Mt. Saint Mary's and Presbyterian for a pair of games apiece next weekend. The Hoyas will host NYIT for a three-game set Feb. 26-28.
