DAVIDSON, N.C. -- The Davidson Wildcat men's and women's swimming and diving teams will begin their pursuit of the 2010 CCSA Championships Thursday morning at the Allan Jones Intercollegiate Aquatic Center on the campus of the University of Tennessee.
Competition opens Thursday morning with a 10 a.m. preliminary session and concludes Saturday with 6 p.m. finals. Click here for a full list of events.
Hoping to cap off an impressive rookie season, freshman Drew Onken enters the weekend with CCSA best times in three events in the 200 fly (1:52.93), the 200 back (1:52.52) and the 400 IM (4:00.12). A three-time CCSA Swimmer of the Week, he swam all three season-best times as the Wildcats competed at the Nike Invitational.
Sophomore Brian Seo has the top time in the CCSA in the 1000 free, a time of 9:56.94 from the Wildcats' dual meet against William & Mary. Davidson also has the top time in the 400 freestyle relay with a time of 3:09.07, swam by Geoffrey Peitz, Onken, Miller Williams and Bryan Droll at the Nike Invitational.
The Wildcat men will face their biggest challenge from the College of Charleston, the defending men's champion with CCSA best-times in every other event, or 10 of 14. Randy Buchanan has the top time in the league in the 50 free (21.17), 100 breast (55.08), 200 breast (2:01.16), 100 fly (50.71) and 200 IM (1:48.53), and Matthew Sherrier is tops in the 100 free (47.00), 200 free (1:41.46), 500 free (4:35.99) and 1650 free (16:39.33).
Davidson has plenty of swimmers poised to make an impact, though. Freshman Wills Cooper has the second-best time in the 50 free (21.79), and sophomore Curtis Chaney, last season's Most Outstanding Male Performer, has the runner-up time in the 200 free (1:41.70).
In addition to three CCSA-best times, Onken has the second-best time in the 500 free (4:40.28), the 200 breast (2:04.82) and the 200 IM (1:53.78). Peitz holds a pair of runner-up times, 52.30 in the 100 back and 1:53.88 in the 200 back, and senior Miller Williams has the second-best time in the 100 fly (50.91).
College of the Charleston's Peter Gibbons has the top score on both the 1- and 3-meter boards, 267.38 and 238.95, respectively, but Davidson should expect a boost from sophomore Ben Lane, last year's Most Outstanding Diver and individual champion in both events, who has not competed yet this season.
Junior Lindsey Martin, two-time CCSA Swimmer of the Week, has the lone CCSA-best time for the Wildcat women, a time of 50.17 in the 100 free. Martin also has the second-best time in the 50 free (23.48) to Gardner-Webb's Corey Hughey (23.22) and the third-best time in the 200 free (1:52.05). Classmates Jessica Delgehausen and Emily Castle have the third-best CCSA times, in the 500 free (5:04.07) and the 100 fly (56.28), respectively.
Florida Gulf Coast's Leah Daniel is tops in the league in the 200 free (1:51.38), 500 free (4:55.65), 1000 free (10:12.89) and 1650 free (17:06.51). FGCU, the defending women's champion, also has the league-best time in the 200 breast, 100 fly, 200 fly, 200 back, 200 IM and 400 IM.
Also in the hunt for the championship on the women's side, Gardner-Webb has three top CCSA times, a pair by Corey Hughey (50 free, 23.22; 100 back, 56.61), and the top time in two relays, the 200 and 400 medley. FGCU is tops in the 400 and 800 freestyle relays, while the Wildcats have the top time in the 200 free relay.
Both the Wildcat men and women finished in second place a season ago. The Cougar men finished ahead of the Wildcats, 886-803, followed by Gardner-Webb, Howard, VMI and Florida A&M.
FGCU finished first on the women's side with 887 points, ahead of Davidson with 653, who were followed by Georgia Southern, Gardner-Webb, North Florida and the College of Charleston.
