BIRMINGHAM, Ala. — Playing its second-to-last road game of the season, the Davidson women's basketball team could not overcome a strong second half start by Samford as the Wildcats dropped a 73-57 road decision at the Pete Hanna Center on Saturday afternoon in Southern Conference action.
The Bulldogs turned a six-point halftime lead into a 14-point advantage by outscoring the Wildcats 21-11 through the first eight minutes of second period to grab a 51-37 lead. Samford hit five of its first seven shots from behind the three-line, getting three of them from Monica Maxwell during the scoring spurt.
Maxwell hit five treys in the half, and six of them for the game, on her way to a game-high 22 points to pace three Bulldogs in double figures. Samford as a team drained 11-of-22 shots from downtown and finished shooting 52.3 percent overall for the contest, including 60 percent (12-20) in the second half.
Kristen Johnsen (Wayne, Pa.) recorded her second career double-double with a personal-best 14 rebounds to go along with 12 points for Davidson, but no other 'Cat reached double figures. The next closest were #Alex?Thompson# (Asheville, N.C.) and Ashley Lax (Little Rock, Ark.) with eight points apiece.
Johnsen led Davidson to a 39-27 advantage on the boards and the 'Cats hit a season-best on offensive rebounds with 19, seven of them from the junior. Of those 19 offensive boards, the Wildcats were able to get 18 second-chance points.
After a quick 30-second timeout by the 'Cats at the 11:35 mark, senior Julia Paquette (Stockbridge, Ga.) hit a layup to cut the deficit to 12?(51-39), but Samford eventually pushed the lead out 19 with 5:40 remaining.
Davidson was able to bring it back down to 13 points, 63-50, on a driving layup by Barbara Sitton (Richmond, Va.), but Maxwell's final trey of the game started a 10-3 run and the 'Cats got no closer than the final score of 73-57.
After falling behind by eight in the early going, Davidson shook off its slow start and used a 14-5 run to take a 16-15 lead on a pair of Sarah Davis (St. Clair, Mich.) free throws at the 8:13 mark.
Samford came right back though, getting a quick five points from Maxwell, followed by a driving layup from Paige Anderson and recaptured the lead at 25-18 with 5:32 left on the clock.
Thompson's baseline jumper cut the deficit down to three, 25-22, but Samford hit its fifth three-ball of the half and would go into halftime up 30-24. Samford nailed five of its 12 first-half shots from behind the arc.
Davidson finishes its last road game of the season with a trip up to Chattanooga on Monday for a 7 p.m. contest.
