Weiss Named PreSeason All-Southern Conference

DAVIDSON, N.C. -- Coming off an All-Southern Conference sophomore season, junior Danny Weiss has been named to the preseason All-Southern Conference Second Team, as selected by the league's head coaches and announced by the conference office today.
Weiss was named to the preseason team after bating .323 (51-for-158) last season and earning a spot on the 2009 All-Southern Conference Second Team in the designated hitter position. He hit six home runs and 14 doubles and drove in 37 runs in 43 games a season ago.
The Wildcats open the 2010 campaign with a three-game series against Georgetown this weekend. First pitch is tentatively scheduled for 6 p.m. Friday Feb. 19.
The College of Charleston's Joey Bergman was selected SoCon Preseason Player of the Year, and Elon's Jimmy Reyes was named SoCon Preseason Pitcher of the Year.
The co-Player of the Year a season ago, Bergman led the country in both runs (88) and on base percentage (.551) in 2009 while finishing second nationally with a .452 batting average. The senior, who split time between shortstop and third base a season ago, also hit 15 home runs and had 57 RBIs while recording two or more hits in 35 of the 56 games.
Reyes, a junior left-handed pitcher, was a perfect 8-0 in 14 starts last season. The ace of the Phoenix staff, Reyes amassed 101 strikeouts in 84.2 innings of work while only surrendering 19 walks. Reyes enters the 2010 season with an 11-0 career record as a collegiate pitcher.
The league also released its preseason polls, with the Wildcats picked to finish 10th by both the media and the coaches. The 2009 Southern Conference regular season champion, Elon, and tournament champion, Georgia Southern, have been tabbed co-favorites for the 2010 campaign in balloting of the league's 11 baseball coaches. while the media selected Elon as the top team in 2010, narrowly edging out GSU.
