Layup Line
• Davidson returns to action by hosting local rival Charlotte Saturday at 7 p.m. in Belk Arena.
• It's BlackOut Belk Arena day, and fans are encouraged to wear black. Money raised from the sale of BlackOut Belk t-shirts will benefit Toys for Tots.
• The Wildcats and 49ers renew the series after a two-year hiatus. Charlotte earned a 75-68 win in the last meeting in Halton Arena in 2007.
• It's just the second home game for the Wildcats, who are in the midst of a stretch where they play 10 of their first 13 games away from home.
• After playing four games in eight days from Nov. 27-Dec. 4, this is Davidson's only contest between Dec. 5 and Dec. 19.
• The Wildcats are coming off a 68-53 win at The Citadel last Saturday, earning their first true road victory of the campaign.
• Three 'Cats are averaging double figures in the scoring column, led by Jake Cohen's 14.1 points a game. JP Kuhlman averages 13 points, and Brendan McKillop averages 10. Cohen also leads the team in rebounding, averaging 6.4, while Clint Mann averages 5.8.
• The Wildcats have 10 underclassman on the team (six freshman, four sophomores) and feature just one senior and four juniors.
• The 'Cats have won 23 of their last 25 against non-conference competition at Belk Arena and are 31-5 since 2003.
• Davidson coach Bob McKillop is 13 wins shy of his 400th career victory.
• Davidson was picked to finish third in the SoCon South Division again this season, while Charlotte was picked seventh in the Atlantic 10.
• Davidson has faced one Atlantic 10 opponent this year and fell 71-58 at Rhode Island. The Rams were picked fifth in the A10 Preseason Poll.
• Charlotte is coming off a 68-57 home win over Winthrop Tuesday. The 49ers are 0-2 on the road this season, losing 83-70 at Oregon State and 62-61 at East Carolina.
• Shamari Spears leads Charlotte in scoring with 17 points a game but has been suspended for the last three games. Jamar Briscoe is averaging 15.6 points, 3.8 rebounds and 4.2 assists a game, and Derrio Green is averaging 11.9 points, 4.7 rebounds and 4.1 assists.
Series History
• Tonight's meeting between Davidson and the 49ers is the 37th overall and 30th Hornets' Nest Trophy Game.
• Charlotte leads the series, which began in 1979, 26-10 and is 20-9 in the Hornets' Nest Trophy Game. The 49ers have won 10 of the last 12 meetings in the series.
• No players on the current Davidson roster saw action in the game the last time the two teams played in December of 2007, while An'Juan Wilderness, Charles Dewhurst and Phil Jones are the only current 49ers who played in the contest.
• Davidson's Stephen Curry scored 32 points, but Charlotte's Leemire Goldwire went for 34 as the 49ers posted a 75-68 victory in the last meeting, which took place in Halton Arena.
• Twelve of Goldwire's points came in the game's final 3:30 to help Charlotte reclaim the Hornets' Nest Trophy.
• Curry was 9-for-19 from the field and 7-for-14 from 3-point range, while Goldwire went 10-of-23 from the floor and 9-of-20 from long distance.
• With Charlotte leading 70-68 and under a minute to play, Goldwire nailed a triple from the wing to make the margin 73-68 with 33 seconds left. Davidson missed a couple chances on its trip down the floor, and Wilderness came away with the rebound and was fouled.
• Jason Richards posted his sixth career double-double with 11 points and 12 assists. Boris Meno had nine points and 13 rebounds, and Thomas Sander finished with seven points and matched his career high with 14 boards.
• Wilderness finished with 12 points and four assists.
• In the last meeting in Belk Arena in 2006, Davidson placed six players in double figures as the Wildcats defeated Charlotte 79-51, ending a three-game losing streak to the 49ers.
• Curry scored 17 to lead the Wildcats, and Meno collected 15 points and 10 rebounds.
• The 'Cats held Charlotte to 32 percent shooting for the game and forced 17 turnovers.
Leftovers from The Citadel
• It was the first road win of the season for the Wildcats.
• It was Cohen's second career double-double with both coming in back-to-back games.
• Davidson improved to 35-5 in its last 40 conference games on the road.
• Davidson has won 17-of-18 against The Citadel overall and eight straight against the Bulldogs on the road.
Youth Movement
• Davidson features 10 underclassmen (four sophomores, six freshman) on its roster.
• The team's lone senior is Brendan McKillop, and two of the juniors are walk-ons (Will Reigel, AJ Atkinson).
• The Wildcats have just 11 total years of Division I experience in their rotation. Only 25 teams in the country have less experience than Davidson.
• Six of the top seven scorers for the Wildcats are freshmen or sophomores.
• Sophomores are playing 48 percent of the team's minutes, while freshman are playing 26 percent. The juniors are playing eight percent, and Brendan is playing 18 percent.
• One senior, three sophomores and a freshman are slated to start tonight's game.
