Volleyball Knocks Off Gardner-Webb in Five

DAVIDSON, N.C. -- SoCon Player of the Week Sarabeth Peele and junior outside hitter Christine Perzinski led the Davidson Wildcat volleyball team to its third straight win with a 3-2 (25-23, 25-18, 17-25, 25-18, 15-13) victory over the Gardner-Webb Runnin' Bulldogs Tuesday night in non-conference action at Belk Arena.

Peele led Davidson (11-8) with a season-high 23 kills, her third straight 20-kill effort, and Perzinski added a season-best 15. Junior middle blocker Madison Benedict made a season-high six blocks, and senior setter Hayley Lawson tallied 51 assists. Four Wildcats finished in double figures in digs, led by 16 from senior libero Jennifer Chamblee

Gardner-Webb (4-14) was led by Molly Rhyne, who finished with 18 kills, 16 digs and four blocks. Melissa Richie and Tyler Cockrell each added 12 kills, and Evan Moffitt tallied 43 assists. Lauren Evans paced the defense with 17 digs. and Cockrell had a team-high seven blocks.

The Wildcats won the first two sets, 25-23 and 25-18, before Gardner-Webb evened the match by winning the next two, 25-17 and 25-18.

Davidson saw a 10-4 lead disappear in the fifth set, as the Runnin' Bulldogs evened the score, 12-12, behind a Wildcat hitting error. But a service error by Gardner-Webb gave possession back to Davidson before a setting error gave the Wildcats a match-point try at 14-12. The Runnin' Bulldogs survived on a Davidson hitting error before Peele punched home her 23rd kill of the match for the win.

With its final non-conference match, Davidson will return to SoCon play, traveling to Charleston to face the College of Charleston Saturday at 2 p.m. and The Citadel Sunday at 2 p.m.
