Birmingham, Ala. — Seventh-seeded Davidson played the second-seeded Samford Bulldogs to a 1-1 draw after 110 minutes, but saw its season come to an end when Samford outscored the Wildcats, 4-3, in penalty kicks on Sunday evening in the first round of the Southern Conference women's soccer tournament at the Bulldog Field.
The Wildcats had a brief 1-0 lead in the shootout after Samford's (12-5-3) Paige Lanter missed the first penalty kick and Julie Calhoun (Palos Verdes, Calif.) connected on her attempt. But shortly after, the Wildcats missed their chance on their second kick, giving the advantage back to the Bulldogs, who connected on their third chance for a 2-1 lead.
Both teams traded penalty kick goals over their two chances. Then after Trine Taule gave Samford a 4-3 lead, Rachel Barnett (Raliegh, N.C.) missed on her chance to tie things up, ending the shootout with a final of 4-3 in favor of Samford.
"I'm extremely proud of tonight's performance," said head coach Greg Ashton. "Samford is a really athletic , well-coached team, and are tough to beat at home. But, we battled all night to stay in the game. For us to score on the road in a playoff game in front of a hostile home crowd showed the character and spirit of this team. This has been a season full of ups and downs, but the girls can honestly look back on tonight's game and say they gave everything to try and get a win, and that's all I ask of them. We came so close and PK shootouts can go either way. We missed out tonight and full credit to Samford, they did what they needed to do and we wish them all the best in the semifinals.”
Rachael Newmister (Clover, S.C.) had tied things up at 1-all and forced overtime in the 80th minute when she took a centering pass from senior Allison Drutchas (Bloomfield Hills, Mich.) in the box and drilled home her second goal of the season. Drutchas tallied her ninth assist of the season, good for a tie for second-most in a Wildcat single-season.
Samford's Lanter gave her team an early 1-0 lead in the 58th minute when she netted her fourth goal of the season, but the Wildcats never back down in tying things up at the 80:53.
Jessie Baxa (Bloomfield Hills, Mich.) played all 110 minutes in goal and finished with five saves. She closed the year with seven shutouts, good for fourth-most in a Wildcat single-season.
Davidson closed the year at 6-8-6 overall and had a 2-4-5 record in SoCon play.
