DAVIDSON, N.C. - The Davidson men's golf team will host the first of two events this season as a total of 13 teams will compete the River Run Country Club for the 2010 Davidson College Invitational Monday and Tuesday.
The 'Cats will be joined by 12 talented teams, including five fellow Southern Conference members in Appalachian State, College of Charleston, Elon, Western Carolina and Wofford. Gardner-Webb, High Point, Presbyterian and Radford from the Big South conference will also be participating, as well as Cincinnati of the Big East, USC Upstate of the Atlantic Sun and Guilford College of the Old Dominion Athletic Conference.
The tournament will begin on Monday morning with the competitors completing 36 holes of play on the day, beginning with a 9:00 a.m. shotgun start. Davidson will be paired with Cincinnati and College of Charleston on the first four holes, with Wofford, Radford and USC Upstate beginning on holes 5-8. Presbyterian, High Point and Elon will start on holes 9-11. Gardner-Webb, Appalachian State and Western Carolina will begin at holes 12-15, and Guilford College will tee off on holes 15-18 along with players competing as individuals.
After conclusion of play in the first 36 holes on day one, the final round tee times will be determined by the team standings up to that point. The seventh-, eighth-, and ninth-place teams will tee off on the first hole beginning at 8:15 a.m., followed by the fourth-, fifth- and and sixth-place teams beginning at 9:00 a.m. The top-three teams will begin to tee off at 9:45 a.m.
On the tenth hole, the 10th-, 11th- and 12th-place teams will begin at 8:20 a.m. and will be followed by the 13th-place team and individuals beginning at 9:05 a.m.
The Invitational will take place at the River Run Country Club, a 7,208-yard, par-72 championship course located in Davidson, N.C. The course was recognized by Golf Reporter as one of the finest tracks in the Southeast, and went through a complete renovation in 2007, including a rebuilding of all of the greens, and a laser-leveling of the tee boxes. It is one of the home courses for the Davidson golf program, giving the 'Cats one of the top facilities in the area.
Wofford's since-graduated Garrett Medeiros won the tournament last year, while Liberty took the team title.
This will be the fourth-and-final tournament of the fall season for Davidson. The 'Cats finished in a tie for seventh place at the season-opening Invitational at The Ocean Course and sixth at the Mason Rudolph Championship. Freshman Richard Fountain (Raleigh, N.C.) took medalist honors Tuesday at the Mizuno Savannah Intercollegiate (Georgia Southern) to lead Davidson to a seventh-place finish.
