DAVIDSON, N.C. - Davidson football player John Behm regularly volunteers his time as a tutor for kindergarteners and fifth-graders at Davidson Elementary School each Tuesday and Thursday afternoon. So when he entered the fifth grade classroom just after 1 p.m. today, it was supposed to be just another “day at the office.”
But representatives from AllState along with the students, staff and faculty from the school, Davidson coach Tripp Merritt, some teammates and coaches, and even John's mother, Kim, and older brother, Dan, were there to greet the junior linebacker and present him with a trophy for being named to the 2010 Allstate AFCAGood Works Team®, one of the most prestigious off-the-field honors in college football.
The award honors the distinguished group of college football players who stand out for the positive influence they have in their communities. Behm is one of 22 players in the country to earn the award and one of 11 from NCAA FCS, Division II, Division III and NAIA schools.
“When I walked into that classroom today, I know my face was bright red. It was a great feeling,” a smiling Behm said after the surprise presentation. “It's my family that made me who I am and motivated me to get into community service so to have them down here with me today to support me along with the kids I work with every week is awesome.”
A Davidson Bonner Scholar, Behm also participates in the Davidson Housing Coalition, helping to repair homes for the needy, and is active in Adopt a Grand-Friend, which partners senior citizens in the area with Davidson students. He recently helped organize a trip by Davidson football players and cheerleaders to the to the Levine Children's Hospital at Carolinas Medical Center in Charlotte and plans to organize more outings throughout the year.
The two-time Pioneer Football League Academic Honor Roll selection has played in all 26 games during his Davidson career and recorded 112 tackles (73 solo), 14 tackles for loss, five sacks, seven pass breakups and three fumble recoveries for the Wildcats. He leads Davidson in tackles for loss this season with seven and has 29 stops overall.
For the first time in the program's history, fans are able to vote for a Team Captain by visiting ESPN.com and searching “Good Works.” The Team Captain will be recognized by ESPN personality and Allstate AFCA Good Works Team® national ambassador Lou Holtz during The Home Depot ESPNU College Football Awards on Dec. 9, at 7 p.m. (ET) on ESPN. The site also features profiles of the award recipients and their selfless acts of kindness.
A total of 112 players across all collegiate levels of the sport were nominated for the award by sports information directors on behalf of their teams, the most ever in the 19-year history of the program. From the nominations, a special selection committee named 22 college football players from across the country to the 2010 Allstate AFCA Good Works Team®.
