HAMPTON, Va. – The Davidson wrestling team dropped a pair of close matches on Friday afternoon at the 30th annual Virginia Duals, hosted by the Peninsula Wrestling Association. Millersville prevailed, 25-17, while The Apprentice School rallied for a 24-21 victory in action taking place in Hampton Coliseum.
The 'Cats held early leads in both matches, but struggled in the heavier weights. Wins at 165, 174, 184 and 197 pounds tipped the match in Millersville's favor after Davidson held an early 13-6 lead. The Wildcats won six of 10 matches against The Apprentice School, but surrendered the maximum six points in each loss with two pins, an injury and a forfeit.
Against Millersville, Davidson (0-9) senior Ben Altman pinned Matt Devestine at 125 pounds in just 1 minute, 27 seconds, while junior Alex Radsky scored a 14-3 major decision over Justin Fegley to give Davidson an early 10-0 lead.
Millersville responded by earning decisions at 141 and 149 pounds, but freshman Brent Mowry scored an 8-4 decision at 157 pounds to give Davidson a 13-6 edge. Sophomore Tyler Mullen, in his first day of competition this season, then lost an 11-5 decision to the nation's 20th-ranked wrestler, Jarrett Hostetter.
Millersville took control from there, scoring 16 points across the 174, 184 and 197 pound classes. Junior Charlie Wolff concluded the match on a winning note for the 'Cats with an 11-3 major decision over Chase Godfrey.
The contest against the Apprentice School unfolded in a similar manner as the 'Cats claimed the first three bouts, only to let the lead slip away.
Altman recorded a 15-0 technical fall, while the Radsky brothers each won 9-5 decisions. But the Builders turned the 11-0 deficit into a one-point advantage in the next two bouts, as Ricky Anderson scored a fall at 149 pounds and Matt Perry won by default at 157 pounds due to injury.
Mullen put the 'Cats back on top, 14-12 after scoring a 6-0 decision at 165, but a fall at 174 pounds put The Apprentice School ahead 18-14. Freshman Ike Crews evened the match at 18 after scoring a major decision victory over Stuart Roes, but the 'Cats did not have a wrestler at 197 pounds, giving the Builders a six-point forfeit win.
Wolff's overtime decision win at heavyweight was not enough, as it only brought Davidson within three.
Vitaly Radsky earned the lone decision in Davidson's favor in the day's first match against Pitt-Johnstown, as the nation's fifth-ranked Division II team won 43-3. Radsky earned a 4-2 decision over Adam Whetstone, a 2009 Division II All-American.
The 'Cats competed in the American College bracket. The Virginia Duals Wrestling Tournament is the largest College and High School Tournament in the world.
Davidson will return to action Saturday, Jan. 16 to face Gardner-Webb at 1:30 p.m., immediately followed by a match against Franklin & Marshall. Gardner-Webb and Franklin & Marshall will face each other to conclude the day's action.
