DAVIDSON, N.C. -- In what could be a preview for next month's CCSA Championships, the Davidson Wildcat women won 13 of 16 events to defeat four league foes in dual meet competition Saturday afternoon at Cannon Natatorium in their final home meet of the 2009-10 season.
The Wildcats defeated Campbell (192-83), Georgia Southern (174-119), N.C. A&T (210.50-60.50) and Radford (207-79).
On senior day, Linnea Buttermore was one of four multiple event winners for the Wildcats. Buttermore, honored in pre-meet festivities along with classmates Kelsey Chisholm, Caroline Curtiss, Caitlin Sheetz, Brad Carman and Miller Williams, won both the 1- and 3-meter diving events with scores of 244.25 and 256.35, respectively. Her score in the 3-meter event is a new Davidson record, bettering the mark set by Liz Nugent of 255.67 from Jan. 22, 2000. Chisholm finished second on the 1-meter with a score of 237.35 and third on the 3-meter with a score of 230.45.
"The intensity with which our women approached this competition is a reflection of the regard in which they hold these conference opponents," head coach John Young said. "I'm proud of them for the way that they enjoyed racing today."
Junior Lindsey Martin won three events to pace the Wildcat women, winning the 50, 100 and 200 freestyle events. Martin won the 50 free with a time of 23.99, ahead of Georgia Southern's Courtney Martz (24.50). She defeated teammates Jean DeOrnellas (54.01) and Jessica Delgehausen (55.33) with a time of 52.38 in the 100 free, and finished first in the 200 free with a time of 1:53.78, just ahead of teammates Anna Stringfield (1:54.19) and Lillie Seifart (1:57.38).
Delgehausen, though, won a pair of individual titles, finishing first in the 500 and 1000 freestyles with times of 5:07.36 and 10:28.56, respectively, the latter a season best. Georgia Southern's Ali Campbell finished in the runner-up spot in both distance freestyle events.
Freshman Kelsey Hobbs swept the backstroke events with season-best times, winning the 100 with a time of 59.36 and the 200 in 2:08.15 and defeating Martz in both.
Junior Emily Castle and Curtiss also were individual event winners for the Wildcat women. Castle won the 100 fly with a time of 56.85, while Curtiss won the 100 breast with a season-best time of 1:07.98.
The Wildcats also swam the best times in both of the relays contested. Seifart, DeOrnellas, Sheetz and Martin combined for the fastest time in the 4x100 freestyle relay (3:37.79), and Hobbs, Curtiss, Castle and DeOrnellas won the 4x50 medley relay with a season-best time of 1:48.44.
"With a boisterous crowd for senior day, the atmosphere in Cannon was exceptional," Young said. "It was a great event for senior day, and we appreciate all the folks who came to support the team."
Georgia Southern's Lauren Parr won the other three events, swimming the best times in the 200 fly, 200 IM and 200 breast. Parr (2:08.34; 2:26.26) defeated Allison Cottle (2:10.37) in the 200 fly and Curtiss (2:27.40) in the 200 breast. She won the 200 IM with a time of 2:10.27, ahead of Radford's Emily Turner (2:14.06).
The Wildcats will conclude the regular season, as both the Wildcat men's and women's teams compete at Gardner-Webb Sat., Jan. 30 at 1 p.m., their final tuneup for the 2010 CCSA Championships, to be contested in Knoxville, Tenn., Feb. 18-20.
