Wolff, Altman Lead 'Cats Comeback Over Millersville

LEXINGTON, Va. – An overtime decision for Charlie Wolff (285 pounds) and a pin by Ben Altman (125 pounds) erased a five-point deficit in the final two bouts to give the Davidson wrestling team a 27-23 win over Millersville on Friday evening in The Thunderdome. Tri-meet host and Southern Conference foe Virginia Military Institute defeated Davidson, 37-4 prior to the Millersville match.

Millersville (3-7-1) held a 23-18 lead over Davidson (2-11, 0-2 SoCon) entering the final two bouts, but Wolff earned a 3-1 overtime decision over Chase Godfrey to bring the 'Cats within two points. Since the match started at 133 pounds, Altman was left with the task of securing the victory in the 125-pound class.

Needing just a decision to tip the match in Davidson's favor, Altman pinned Matt Devestine in one minute, 40 seconds for the final four-point margin. Altman had previously pinned Devestine just two weeks ago at the Virginia Duals. Millersville was victorious that day though, earning a 25-17 victory.

The Wildcats had jumped out to a large lead early, but Millersville stormed back in the heavier weights. Millersville forfeited the first two matches at 133 and 141 pounds, giving freshman Matt Zarth and senior Ben Thompson, respectively, a pair of six-point wins. Junior Vitaly Radsky wrestled at 149 pounds for just the second time in his collegiate career, and the first-time since his freshman year, but the 141-pounder was able to pull out a 3-2 decision over J.J. Lester to give the 'Cats a 15-0 lead.

Jarret Hostetter, who was previously nationally-ranked, pinned junior Joe McGinley at 157 pounds to put Millersville on the scoreboard, but sophomore Tyler Mullen responded with a 4-2 decision over Steve Hess to extend the 'Cats' lead to 12 points.

Millersville erased the margin in the next two bouts, winning by forfeit at 174 pounds and winning by fall at 184 pounds. They went ahead by five points after earning a technical fall at 197 pounds, but were unable to stop Wolff and Altman.

Mullen was the only victorious Wildcat against VMI (4-5, 2-1 SoCon), taking a 10-2 major decision against Conor Black. Michael Long (149) and Vinnie Gallo (184) both won by fall for VMI. Joe Munro took a major decision at 157 pounds, while Andrew Bannister (133), David Yost (141), Ronnie Ellsworth (197), Josh Wine (285) and John Pope (125) won via decisions.

The 'Cats will face another strong SoCon opponent on Wednesday, traveling to face UNC Greensboro at 7 p.m.
