Gardner-Webb and Franklin & Marshall will compete first at 12 p.m., their match will immediately be followed by the Davidson and Franklin & Marshall match, which could be as early as 1:30 p.m. The 'Cats will then take on Gardner-Webb immediately following the Franklin & Marshall match, which could be as early as 3 p.m.
Fans unable to attend in person can follow the action at home on live video and, new this season, live stats.
Scouting the Wildcats: Injuries have proven to be one of the biggest challenges for the 'Cats this season. A difficult schedule and a string of bad luck have left the 'Cats with an 0-9 record as they near the halfway point of the regular season. They are coming off a difficult trip to the Virginia Duals, at which they lost all three of their matches. Pitt-Johnstown, one of the top-teams in the country despite their Division II status, took a 43-3 win in the first match. Davidson then dropped two heartbreakers to Millersville and The Apprentice School. The 'Cats let an early lead slip away, as they fell 25-17 to Millersville. Against The Apprentice School, Davidson won six of 10 matches, but the Builders earned a pin at 149 pounds, and then scored a pair six-point wins due to injury and another six points via a Davidson forfeit at 197 pounds to take a 24-21 victory.
Senior Ben Altman (125 pounds) led the 'Cats with 11 points scored via a pin and a technical fall in three matches. His performance earned him the Southern Conference's Student-Athlete of the Week honor. Altman lead the team with a 14-8 overall record.
Altman is tied with junior Vitaly Radsky (141) for the most dual wins on the team, as both have four each. Vitaly, his twin brother Alex (133), and junior Charlie Wolff (285) all went 2-1 at the Virginia Duals. Wolff dropped his first five bouts of the season but has since won five of his last seven.
Sophomore Tyler Mullen (165) saw his first action of the season at the Virginia Duals, where he went 1-2. Mullen suffered an 11-5 decision loss to Millersville's Jarrett Hostetter, ranked 20th in the country.
Scouting the Diplomats: Franklin & Marshall is also searching for their first dual win this season, as they enter Saturday at 0-5. They most recently suffered a 33-10 defeat to a Southern Conference foe of Davidson's, VMI. The Diplomats forfeited three of the bouts to spot VMI 18 points. Jacob Bucha leads the team with an 11-4 record at 125 pounds. Franklin & Marshall competes in the EIWA.
Scouting the Bulldogs: Gardner-Webb also enters Saturday winless at 0-6, most recently losing to VMI on Dec. 11, 21-15 after forfeiting the final bout of the match. They also faced another SoCon school in Chattanooga, to which they lost, 47-0. The Bulldogs were dominant though in the Davidson Open on Dec. 5, winning the heavyweight, 197, 165 and 149-pound classes. They also took second in the 125, 141, 165 and 184-pound classes. Heavyweight Dustin Porter is ranked 13th in the nation and boasting a 19-4 record pinned Davidson's Charlie Wolff for the Davidson Open title.
The Series: Davidson last faced Franklin & Marshall during the 2005-06 season, winning 27-22. Gardner-Webb has an eight-match winning-streak over the 'Cats, with Davidson last defeating the Bulldogs during the 1998-99 season.
Up Next: The 'Cats will face both VMI and Millersville on Friday, Jan. 22 in Lexington, Va.
