DAVIDSON, N.C. - Following a pair of games this past weekend in Washington, D.C. the Davidson field hockey team will return to the friendly confines of Belk Turf Field tonight when they welcome No 4 North Carolina for a non-conference contest at 6:00 p.m.
Fans that are unable to make it out to the field tonight can follow all the action via live stats, which can be found here.
Scouting the Wildcats: After splitting a pair of contests this past weekend, Davidson currently sits at 2-2 on the season, with victories over Sacred Heart and Georgetown, both coming by way of 1-0 scores. Freshman Finley Amato, who scored the game-winner over Sacred Heart on her first career goal, was named the season's first NorPac Rookie of the Week last week by the conference office. Junior Ellie Szykowny leads the team with a pair of goals and four points so far this year, with freshman Annie Evans also notching a game-winning goal, scoring in overtime to beat Georgetown. Senior goalkeeper Christa Goeke has been solid in net for the 'Cats, allowing just four goals in over 285 minutes of action while making 19 saves and recording a pair of shut outs.
Scouting the Tar Heels: North Carolina comes into the contest on a three-game winning streak to open the season, including a 4-1 win over Wake Forest last Friday evening in their home opener. The Tar Heels, who were ranked No. 4 in the 2009 Kookaburra / NFHCA Division I Preseason Poll, have outscored their opponent by an 11-2 margin so far this season. They are led by five seniors, including Melanie Brill, who sits atop the team leaderboard with three goals and six points so far on the year. Also with six points recorded are freshman Kelsey Kolojejchick and junior Katelyn Falgowski, who was one of three Tar Heels to be named preseason All-ACC, joining Illse Davids and Jackie Kintzer.
The Series: Saturday's contest will be the tenth all-time meeting in the series, which dates back to 1977. Davidson will be looking for its first win over the Tar Heels, having gone winless in nine previous games.
Up Next: Davidson will continue their two-game home stand this Saturday, Sept. 12 when they face off against Big Ten opponent Indiana at Belk Turf Field. Game time for the first-ever meeting between the two schools is scheduled for 3:00 p.m
