
Early Deficit Too Much For Wildcats To Overcome in 3-1 Loss

WASHINGTON, D.C. - After giving up three first-half goals, the Davidson field hockey team was unable to mount a late comeback against Cornell, falling 3-1 Saturday afternoon on the campus of American University in Washington, D.C.
Cornell (1-0) got on the board just under five minutes into the game, when Kelly Kantarian scored her first of two goals on the day. The Big Red then took a 2-0 lead at the 22:58 mark of the first half, then notched their third goal of the frame just three minutes later when Kantarian found the net for the second time in the match.
Despite the 3-0 deficit, Davidson (2-2) kept battling and got on the board just over five minutes into the second half when junior Ellie Szkowny became the first Wildcat player to record two goals on the year and pulled the 'Cats within two of the lead.
In net, senior Christa Goeke made three saves in the full 70 minutes of action, and continued her march on the Davidson all-time record books, moving into fourth place on the career minutes list with 2,473:44.
Szykowny and reigning NorPac Rookie of the Week Finley Amato led the Wildcats with a pair of shots apiece, both of which were on goal. Junior Clare Perry and sophomore Meg Jarrell each took one shot attempt in the contest.
Davidson was out-shot by a 12-6 margin, but held the second-half shot advantage 5-3. The Wildcats took one penalty corner to six by Cornell, and saw five shots find the goal compared to the Big Red's six.
The 'Cats will return home this Tuesday, Sept. 8 when they welcome perennial national power North Carolina to Belk Turf Field for a 6:00 p.m. contest.
